'Melania': What The Critics Are Saying About Amazon's Controversial Big-Budget Documentary

Source: Deadline

The first notices are rolling in for Amazon MGM Studios’ controversial, big-budget First Lady documentary Melania.

Described as “an intimate chronicle that offers a rare glimpse into the life of Melania Trump, exploring her role as First Lady and her relationship with the President,” the film marks the comeback of filmmaker Brett Ratner, who has been a pariah in Hollywood following multiple accusations of sexual harassment, which he has denied.

Critics, who weren’t invited to preview screenings or the premiere that took place Thursday in Washington, D.C., are now catching up with the movie and it’s as bad as many predicted.

The Daily Beast panned the film: “The truth is, my soul left my body during the very first seconds of the film, when a drone shot over the ocean makes its way over the Mar-a-Lago grounds to Melania’s feet in heels, walking to her car as The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” plays. But my soul didn’t just escape and flee, which it would have been in its every right to do. No, it lingered, glaring at me the entire Melania running time with a mixture of disappointment and anger, like an owner would at their dog after it ate the garbage.”

Last night, I left an empty chickpea can on my counter. When I came back 30 minutes later, small, black bugs had swarmed the tin and were crawling over my sink. I would rather relive that moment a hundred times over than have to watch another minute of the movie Melania.

Another reviewer:
Ratner’s film plays like a gilded trash remake of Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest in which a button-eyed Cinderella points at gold baubles and designer dresses, cunningly distracting us while her husband and his cronies prepare to dismantle the Constitution and asset-strip the federal government.

She loves to show off her stilettos Useless shots of her high heeled foot stepping out of a car or walking somewhere pointless. Her depth really shows in this visual bribe.

After 40 some years of walking on those things her feet are probably like a Barbie doll's feet.

Pretty amusing that this dump is today and even features Melanie’s emails to Maxwell.

Are revamping their images. She has a Mar-a-Lago face with the high cheekbones and fish lips. He has a beard and is now wearing a cowboy hat.

They were going to a fashion show, and she was dressed up in a tight skirt and stilettos and she tripped on the doorway as she walked in.

They are both so fucking weird. A bunch of clowns. Like a lot of those with Mar a Lago face, she looked attractive before all the work.

Bezos obviously needed to come up with a way to massage Trump’s ego, so this stupid movie project was perfect. He needed to bribe Trump without looking like he’s bribing him.

What’s funny is it sounds like low budget trash but they’re just throwing so much money at it. I’m sure Melania’s pocketing it.

chin line looks a lot more squared off than the visual that a new beard would give. Doesn't matter, even with all his money and a paid off trophy (?) wife, he will always be a goofy nerd.

That is why the release is critical. These people need to be outed and Trump's bubble bursts.

to be used? Or, perhaps it was used like trump uses music for his rallies -- just use it without permission and let the artists scream?
I'm anxious to hear that story come out.
