'Our cities are no longer safe': GOP mayors condemn Trump immigration enforcement

A number of Republican mayors are condemning the Trump administration’s hardline immigration enforcement tactics in Minnesota, as they call on the president to pull back from Minneapolis and worry their cities might be next.

“It’s roiling the country,” Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt told POLITICO. “We’re all sort of feeling the angst of our residents and the fear that our city will be next and that chaos is going to inevitably creep across the entire country.”

Fresno, California, Mayor Jerry Dyer said in an interview that “too much damage has been done” with the crackdown and “the trust in communities has been lost.” And Burnsville, Minnesota, Mayor Elizabeth Kautz, warned that the agency’s current tactics meant “our cities are no longer safe.”

The remarks from the trio of moderate-leaning GOP mayors who have broken with Trump in the past came at the annual gathering of the nonpartisan U.S. Conference of Mayors, held blocks from the White House. Holt chairs the conference.

state cities to force compliance with his lawless policies and beat Democrats into submission. He lies about crime, claiming that crime rates in urban areas are going up when they've been coming steadily down since the pandemic. And then he unleashes a horde of criminals to terrorize, kidnap, rob, and kill law-abiding citizens and nobody who looks like a person of color. It is the classic playbook of the fascist wannabe: falsely accuse your opponents of doing exactly what you are planning to do.

From the same article: "Holt, who runs one of the most conservative large cities in the U.S. but backed Kamala Harris over Trump in 2024, warned that Trump’s interior enforcement was a failure." He was a conservative Rep. when he was in the state govt. and represented a very conservative district, but he is now, to quote him, "Mayor of the whole city", and he works to prove it. He has done a lot of good stuff for the minority areas of town that have been neglected for years. Don't dis my mayor, he did't "make this bed". He's the only R that I've voted for in years.

part. They get away with doing this stuff in large cities or to the commies living on the west coast, but to bring it to a small mid-western city that is well-known for their hospitality and low crime rate. A town that many fondly call home. In the dead of winter for heaven's sake. Maybe they thought people hibernated and they wouldn't notice.
