Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced Monday that Iowa, alongside three other states, has reached a settlement agreement allowing state officials to access a federal immigration database to verify citizenship status of voters for the next 20 years. The settlement includes an agreement by the states to provide state drivers license data to the federal government, Stateline reported Monday.
Bird, as well as Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, were plaintiffs in the case alongside officials from Florida, Ohio and Indiana. The lawsuit challenged the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which contains the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, for allegedly withholding information unlawfully about people registered to vote in states including Iowa that were flagged by state officials for potentially not having U.S. citizenship.
Bird celebrated the agreement as a way to ensure Iowa elections integrity. Only American citizens can vote in Iowa elections, Bird said in a statement. This agreement with the Trump administration will help Iowa safeguard the integrity of our elections for years to come by preventing an illegal vote to cancel out the vote of Iowa citizens.
Bird and Pate filed their lawsuit on this issue in December 2024, shortly after the 2024 general election.

(40,626 posts)I know none of their reasons are what they claim, but I can't help not they're not even internally consistent.

(2,462 posts)So that they can cast ONE VOTE, in an election where many millions of other people voted. Because they totally calculated that this is both morally right AND a logical risk to take, wherein the benefits outweigh the costs, so they do it by the 10's of 1000's, every election!
Oh wait, that basically never happens (because almost nobody is that fucking stupid), and in fact the vast majority of 'voter fraud' in the country is widows and widowers (and children of parents who recently died) signing their dead relatives ballot. Usually they're Reich-Wingers and their justification for doing so is that they're "cancelling out the votes of all the illegals".
BTW, you know what sort of person LOVES spreading the idea in a democratic society that all their elections are hopelessly corrupt?
WANNABE TYRANTS & DICTATORS.

(3,481 posts)Shit. You have to be a US citizen to vote in federal elections. No undocumented immigrant will risk arrest and deportation over this.
Additionally, voter fraud is next to nonexistent and on the scale that they claim, impossible without a vast conspiracy. One that would be so large, someone would have already said something to the wrong person and blown it wide open. For example, one Repuke here in NC had an illegal ballot harvesting operation going on. There werent all that many people involved, but they got caught.
In recent history at least, of the minuscule amount of fraud thats occurred, its a verifiable fact that its that the vast majority has been perpetrated by people on the right. Several cases in Florida committed by idiots in The Villages. There have been other, scattered cases of idiots voting twice
for Cantaloupe Caligula the Corpulent. One used his dead mothers ballot (she died before she could vote). He wanted to make sure her wishes were honored. (yeah, sure pal). And then Caligulas former Chief of Staff, voted illegally here in NC, claiming a rundown trailer as his address (it wasnt, and hed never stayed there).
The list goes on. But again, not on the scale they want people to believe. It is impossible. Period.
Edit to add: This performance is designed to intimidate minorities. Thats it. End of story.
