U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Tuesday threatened to cut off federal funding to Democratic-leaning states over their alleged refusal to share SNAP program data with the Trump administration.
The administration will begin to stop moving federal funds into those states starting next week until they comply, Rollins told President Donald Trump during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.
Rollins said her department needs the state-by-state data on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as food stamps, to root out this fraud and to protect the American taxpayer. The secretary said the U.S. Department of Agriculture in February had asked all 50 states for the first time to turn over their data to the federal government.
She said 29 red states complied, but 21 blue states continue to say no. The noncompliant states include California, New York and Minnesota, Rollins said.

What's a state going to do when its citizens complain that their bank accounts have been frozen? It's not just a federal issue, and states also have an interest in ensuring that the same SSAN isn't claiming benefits in multiple locations. The likely reasons are individual fraud or identity theft. Why wouldn't any state want to stop that?

For FICA, the amount also would likely not be credited to their Social Security career earnings. Amounts needed for Medicare eligibility wouldn't be paid. Individuals would be far more affected than state governments. In this game of the biggest loser, the individuals come in first.

There was some discussion here about CA - Could California really withhold tax money from the U.S. if Trump cuts federal funds?
And also some about NY (where legislation is actually being drafted) - State lawmakers call for withholding state employees federal taxes
