Backfire: More white clergy running as Dems after Trump 'duped' churches

The Guardian reports roughly 30 Christian white clergy, including pastors, seminary students and other faith leaders, are filing or have already filed to be Democratic candidates in next years midterm elections.
I
think the stereotypes of Republicans being pro-faith are bull
, said Justin Douglas, who is running for a House seat in Pennsylvania. Were seeing a current administration bastardize faith almost every day. They used the Lords Prayer in a propaganda video for what theyre now calling the Department of War. That should have had every single evangelicals bells and whistles and alarms going off in their head: this is sacrilegious.
Douglas, 41, is among a new generation of the Christian left looking to evolve the Democratic brand beyond college-educated urbanites and connect it with white working-class churchgoers. This, said the Guardian, breaks the traditional racial divide between Republicans and Democrats with Black pastors who run for office typically bring Democrats and their white counterparts often Republicans. For years, that divide has strengthened the Republican brand among the religious right and evangelical voters.
Douglas numbered himself among that faction. He grew up on an Indiana farm, the son of a factory worker and eldest of five children. He studied at Liberty University, founded by conservative pastor and televangelist Jerry Falwell, reports the Guardian, and he recalls wearing a T-shirt expressing opposition to Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. But that was two decades ago, before Trump entered the scene with his multiple wives, mistresses, assault accusations and his admission to Access Hollywood of how exactly to grab women.

(617 posts)and I'm opposed to that too. Neither is necessarily a good thing. I share your suspicions and skepticism.

(4,007 posts)A good friend of mine has decided to run for office and she is a Christian--an AUTHENTIC Christian who actually practices the teaching of Christ. But she has no desire to shove her beliefs down anyone's throat. Just because a Christian runs for office doesn't mean they want to turn the nation into a "Christian" nation.

(617 posts)but if they're boasting about their Christian credentials, then that makes me suspicious.

(13,125 posts)I know people can change their minds with additional knowledge, but these people have known what Trump was since 2016. They have also seen the Republican Party fall into line behind Trump, openly celebrating misogyny, homophobia, and racism. They have seen the constant lying, the sexual predations, and the greed for a decade, and they are only now deciding that they arent really Republican voters anymore! Methinks there may be some wolves in sheeps clothing here.

(9,100 posts)They saw what was happening for years and did nothing. Or worse. - Participated!!! Because it served their purposes. Liberty U. theologians? Oral Roberts? Regent University? Get lost.
Imagine them determining health care laws.

(7,317 posts)They may be sincere, but I dont care. The clergy earned my distrust. Kind of like the billionaire class.

(6,269 posts)Why do they want to be Democrats now? Do they now believe what the Democratic Party stands for or are they just looking for another way to get back in power? If they actually believed what trump was saying I say we find someone smarter and more compassionate.

(1,923 posts)But it seems like an effort to poison the Democratic Party and offset progressivism.
I believe in religious freedom. But I really don't want any of these people anywhere near government.
About one-fourth of Americans attend Christian services regularly. I am sick of this minority dominating the rest of us. Let's look for educators, scientists, union leaders, regular working people to run for these offices.

(1,415 posts)While there are true people of faith, there are waaaay too many opportunists out there who are just looking for a fast buck and an easy ride. As Rachel Maddow says, "Watch what they do, NOT what they say!"

They are a different breed from those like Senator (Rev.) Raphael Warnock, who has always been on the forefront of civil rights issues and currently ministers MLK's former church.

(2,611 posts)and they can't get it back. They only want to try and 'take over' the democratic party because it's calcuably easier than starting from scratch. They aren't interested in the people or good policy, they want power back as quickly as possible.
