Tariffs cause shortage on holiday decor

Source: The Hill

11/15/25 2:48 PM ET

While retailers are gearing up for Christmas, business owners warn consumers might see fewer options and higher price tags for decorations this year as a result of the Trump administration’s sweeping tariffs.

Artificial Christmas trees have been one of the hardest hit holiday staples. Chris Butler, the CEO of the National Tree Company, told The Hill’s sister network NewsNation that his company has had to increase their prices by about 10 percent and the product they’ve imported is down 25 percent this year.

“We tried to absorb some costs, as you said, you know, we asked our manufacturing partners to absorb some costs, but then ultimately, we did have to pass some cost on,” Butler explained. He added that he would like to see the U.S. government grant an exemption on Christmas decor when it comes to the import taxes and has been working to educate lawmakers on why the trees are made in China.

“We’ve had very constructive conversations with many members of the Senate Finance Committee. You know, that’s kind of where things could happen in the future,” the CEO continued. “The ask is really kind of more educational around why these products can’t be made in the U.S., and then you know what some potential solutions could be.”

THAT wasn't "the U.S. government". NONE of those people you talked to in Congress had ANYTHING to do with "tariffs". They abdicated their duty. THAT came from one person and it wasn't Congress, which is why there are multiple lawsuits going right now and the SCOTUS just had hearings on it last week.

Several stores just had 50% off sales to get rid of excess stock, including artificial trees.

When I was growing up we used the same decorations every single year and as kids we were still always excited about the tree. Let's not forget that all of it is made in China and ends up in the landfill eventually like you said.

I don't want to be a Grinch, but more expensive/less available holiday decor seems to be amongst the less harmful lessons (as opposed to food, medicine, etc) to shove in Americans' faces as a demonstration of their bad fucking decision to elect this orange sack of crap and his Congressional enablers.

I know someone who has to rent a storage unit just for their Christmas decorations. Most of which will be in a landfill in a decade or so. It would do Americans (and the environment) good to get back to being thrifty and frugal IMHO.

I'd actually be less of a grinch if I saw a lot fewer houses that looked like Disneyland. Do we really need to light of the entire neighborhood for Christmas?
