SNAP Benefits Update: Trump Admin Says 'Everyone' Will Have To Reapply

The Trump administration has revealed plans to make all current SNAP recipients reapply for their benefits in an attempt to prevent fraud.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told Newsmax on Thursday the plan is to have everyone reapply for their benefits, make sure that everyone thats taking a taxpayer-funded benefit through ... food stamps, that they literally are vulnerable and they cant survive without it. Newsweek has contacted the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for comment via email outside of regular working hours.
Why It Matters
SNAP benefits are paid out to around 42 million low- and no-income Americans to help them afford groceries.
It comes after the government shutdown, which ended this week, caused a lapse in federal funding for SNAP during the shutdown, which prompted President Donald Trump to question the programs overall cost. SNAP spending totaled about $100 billion in fiscal year 2024.

They want to eliminate it. Period.

(16,835 posts)It surprises me to NO end that there are Democrats in Congress who don't seem to get that simple concept.
People will have to reapply, there will be snags, there will be stalls, and people in need will suffer. This is Trump University 101.
I honestly think that Trump wants to eliminate SNAP as has been suggested in an early reply. But I think he's going to use the fact that people and corporations step up and donate to food banks, etc. as a means to say it's not even needed. It's admirable that people and companies who are able to help want to help and actually do, but it's not sustainable. We need the government to do what it's supposed to do for its people.
I want may tax dollars helping people who are hungry; not helping Bezos buy another yacht.

(16,835 posts)Two corporations stepped up and funded it. Several churches here have had food banks, etc., but I don't think they help unless it's some kind of a scheduled event.
No matter which part of the general populace tries to help, it is still not sustainable for the numbers that have need.
Thanks for the perspective. I'm glad to know that there are SOME faith-based organizations who understand need.

(21,134 posts)this is really sick on the part of the Republican party. Apparently their goal is to weed out the ones they don't like and the ones approved, probably will receive much less.
Less recipients, more money for the Billionaires.

(11,992 posts)essentially reapply -- every six to 12 months now in most states. So, this ain't much, if any change. In fact, the recertification is often called reapplying in some states.
The issue is how the red states will apply the rules under trump's admin. Of course, we don't even know what trump's henchmen mean by "reapplying" because they don't likely know either.
Hope22
(4,336 posts)If they truly have to reup that often the data base cant be that far off. Pay the money and begin the recertification process!
Silent Type
(11,992 posts)substantially. They'll come up with a plan that is based on one's previous recertification date, or something. More likely, they'll just keep doing what they've been doing but touting it as some great trump change that weeds out "all the crooks" MAGAt's think are cheating the system.

(4,336 posts)Because if you think desperate people with starving children and senior parents are going to sit back and wait you are dreaming. Expect things to start going missing in a big way. I sat at a luncheon during the * years and my super wealthy friend started talking about the poor. I told her that when things get bad, which I feared in those days, if I have a hungry baby and zero money for food I would have to steal a purse or wallet to feed that child. She looked at me and said she was glad people didnt think like I did. Around the table 10 out of 12 of my quilter friends said that they too would do that!! It was very eye opening for all of us.

And this time- the Dems better not cave. These people do not negotiate in good faith. Wasn't the argument that people were starving one of the big reasons cited for caving? And now look where we are. Back to almost zero. I'm betting that all those laid off federal workers will have to reapply for their jobs soon too.

(36,538 posts)Oglala Lakota County, SD, and Kusilvak Census Area, AK, have the highest rates of SNAP participation, with over 40% of households using the program. However, the largest number of participants is in California, and New Mexico has the highest percentage of its population receiving benefits among the states.
Counties with the highest participation rate
Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota: Over 40% of households use SNAP.
Kusilvak Census Area, Alaska: Over 40% of households use SNAP.
States with the highest number and percentage of participants
California: Has the largest number of SNAP participants in the nation.
New Mexico: Has the highest percentage of its population receiving SNAP benefits.
Guam: Has the highest rate of SNAP benefits as a percentage of its population among all states and territories.
and this snip from 2023:
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the program, a preliminary tally of over 42 million Americans around 12.6% of the nation were participating in the program as of November 2022. In some states, that figure approaches 1 in every 5 residents.
The state with the highest rate of participation in SNAP was New Mexico, where 24.3% of the states residents were enrolled as of November 2022, nearly 5 percentage points higher than any other state. After New Mexico, Louisiana (19.5%), West Virginia (18.2%), Oklahoma (17.2%) and Oregon (17.0%) were among the states with the highest rates of participation.

(250 posts)There are already well established programs, services, procedures for this as mentioned earlier. The truth also is that many of the programs and services that help people with this are medicaid funded services, i.e. this will probably much more expensive than the small handful of fraudsters cost (which can probably be said of just about every one of these stupid root out fraud initiatives.) The truth also is, this will affect a huge portion of the MAGA base. Not the individuals, but the entire communities, those that need assistance, those that provide assistance, stores, families, churches, everyone. This is what happens when people who have no idea how things work and who believe reading random nonsense on the internet is "doing your own research" wind up in charge.

(8,468 posts)It violates the dictum of innocent until proven guilty. It also violates medical and legal practice in such services where rules and regulations already exist to address such considerations.
As in other pogroms run by Trump and the Project 2025 klan, they are asserting that the lies, innuendo and rumors which they, themselves have promoted regarding fraud and waste as reason to assume that ANYONE who receives service must be bilking the system.
I rather think that we should treat THEM as the existential threat to lawful service which they project on legitimate clients. Criminal referrals and arrest warrants should thus be forthcoming.
THEY have falsely asserted that we are not deserving of such "privilege" when the language and practice which established and guided these agencies make clear their intent and obligation under the law.

While it appeared there were fewer items at this months distribution, volunteers worked for nearly two hours to organize the food into smaller parcels to be handed out to 1,806 individuals in 398 families. Last months event saw 608 individuals in 235 families.
