Republicans scramble for health care plan, as Democrats eye midterm battle

Republicans in Washington successfully defused the 43-day government shutdown without surrendering to Democrats demands to spend billions more to offset spiking health insurance costs. Now, the GOP is under mounting pressure to figure out its own plan.
Enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies are set to expire in just weeks which would more than double the cost of premiums nationally for tens of millions of Americans. And its causing deep anxiety among some in the party, particularly in battleground seats, who worry Republicans will end up doing nothing to prevent those price hikes and enter a critical midterm year with the issue of health care haunting them once again.
GOP leaders in the House have begun work on their own package, which is unlikely to extend those subsidies and instead will seek other ways to reduce costs, according to multiple people familiar with the discussions. But Republicans are not committing to doing anything on health care by December 31, when those subsidies expire and premiums are set to spike. Inside the White House, officials are accelerating efforts to put together a new health care plan that fulfills President Donald Trumps desire to take another shot at overhauling Obamacare.
Those early discussions have sought to balance Trumps demands against the broader Republican Partys wariness of waging another politically disastrous health care war, four people familiar with the matter said. Officials are debating a limited package of conservative health care changes, including eliminating the enhanced ACA subsidies in favor of funneling money directly to Americans potentially through an expansion of health savings accounts.

(2,406 posts)The ACA only allows Quality Health Plans to be sold on Healthcare.gov. No pre- existing condition nonsense, "...provides essential health benefits, follows established limits on cost-sharing (like deductibles, copayments, and out-of-pocket maximum amounts), and meets other requirements under the Affordable Care Act." From Healthcare.gov.

Throw together a thesis in a weekend, and then present it on Monday.
This Republican attempt to overhaul the ACA before Dec 31st is an embarrassment, its an affront to the American public, and its simply a way to run out the clock until January 1st when premiums are going to skyrocket, people will just not have insurance and urgent care and ERs will be inundated.
Get rid of the Insurance companies. Shut off the for-profit health insurance fraud scheme. Institute Medicare for EVERYONE. Deduct a miniscule tax on all incomes, eliminate copays, premiums and stop with the in-network and out-of-network nonsense. All doctors, all healthcare providers, all hospitals are acceptable places to get the care you need.
We are the only civilized country on the globe that doesnt have Universal care for all its citizens. And its disgusting. Its inhumane.

(1,046 posts)It is not hyperbolic to say in the end that will kill Americans.
Some Americans like myself.
ACA banned lifetime limits.
If they get rid of ACA, and lifetime limits go back into effect, my insurance would be worthless.
I was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1990.
I am in my third remission. Unfortunately, my maintenance treatment costs in excess of $1 million.
When it returned in 2019, I went through four unsuccessful treatments over 2 years.
I was able to achieve a complete remission with the fifth due to ban on lifetime limits and cancer research.
In addition, Trump and GOP have cancelled cancer research.

(3,425 posts)None of their proposals make any sense. They are grumbling about insurance companies, but wouldn't money given directly to people in health savings accounts also go straight to insurance companies?
There's no way that they could directly give people enough money to meet all their healthcare needs. That's what insurance is for - sharing the risk. I had gall bladder surgery 6 years ago and my total bill was something like $54,000. After a hefty discount between my insurance and the hospital, I had to pay right at $5,000 out of pocket and my insurance paid $20,000. There is no way that Republicans would give me or anyone else $25,000 a year in a health savings account. One major surgery would wipe that out, and more.

PERIOD.
The insurance company scheme cannot continue at this pace. It is causing untold financial hardship and has been for quite some time.

(24,405 posts)Typical Trump and Republican stupidity. Healthcare accounts for a significant portion of our economy but these fools think they can slap together a better plan in a couple of months.
Theyve had a decade to work on their so-called plan yet they have nothing to offer. Losers.

(12,547 posts)the AHCA (American Health Care Act) and the BCRA (Better Care Reconciliation Act), which were remarkably similar to the ACA except vastly underfunded -- such that premiums were expected to be much much higher (and coverage weaker) for most people, leading the CBO to estimate 22 million people would lose insurance as a result. Yet it came just one vote short of passing.
