Ocasio-Cortez hears growing calls for her to challenge Schumer in New York
Source: The Hill
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was already seen as a strong contender to challenge Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for his Senate seat before the government shutdown.
Calls for the progressive star to challenge the Senate Democratic leader have only grown louder since a group of Senate Democrats voted for a deal to reopen the government, triggering a fresh wave of anger at Schumer from members of his own party.
Many Democrats believe Ocasio-Cortez could easily take out Schumer in a 2028 primary given the rage in the party over the shutdown deal and the partys congressional leadership in general, a scenario that a year ago seemed questionable.
Others are convinced the Senate minority leader wont even run for reelection, potentially paving the way for the congresswoman to fill his seat.

(31,256 posts)She would do well to spend some time as a senator.
In this climate, putting her on the presidential ticket is just what the GOP ordered. She is a woman. She is not white. And she stands far to the left. We would be crucified.
Someday she will be an outstanding candidate, but running too early will sully her name for the future.
Something we really need to remember in the primaries. 'Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.'

(28,586 posts)He was only a few years older than AOC at the time.
"This young guy is amazing! Give him a couple of terms in the Senate and then some time as governor of Illinois, and he'll be a shoe-in for president!"
Four years later (not even one full senate term) and he was accepting the nomination for POTUS - and we all know the rest of the story.
I'm biased toward more experienced politicians - particularly those with significant executive experience (preferably governor of a significant state)... but that doesn't appear to be the model any longer.

(2,502 posts)Although, currently, I'd like Newsom & AOC to be our President and Vice Presidential candidates in 2028. A coast-to-coast ticket. The anti-oligarch, anti-pedophelia, pro-America ticket.

(1,901 posts)I think she should stage herself ready to step into his shoes and it would be better to have his endorsement when he's ready to step down, which may be '28, than have him as an enemy. You know honey vs. vinegar.
IMHO.

(4,899 posts)He should not run for re-election. We need leaders who are willing to accept the fact that the old I'll scratch your back, if you scratch my back isn't going to work anymore. The Republicons are a 100 percent more likely to stab you in the back than scratch it. I think a part of him knows that, but I also think he's too polite to go for the jugular when necessary.
It's clear AOC doesn't suffer from the same issue. She's not afraid to speak out against the Magats forcefully when necessary.
