Dog shoots owner in the back after jumping on shotgun left on bed: Police

Source: ABC News

A Pennsylvania man is now hospitalized after his dog allegedly fired a shotgun at him, injuring him in the back, according to the Shillington Police Department.

At approximately 11:13 p.m. on Tuesday, officials received reports of a shooting and that a 53-year-old man had suffered a gunshot wound to his back, police said in a press release obtained by ABC News.

While police were on their way to the scene, officials were informed that a dog had "jumped onto the bed and set the gun off," police said. Once at the scene, officials found the man on the floor and conscious, police said.

The victim told police that before the incident, he was cleaning his firearm -- which was identified as a shotgun -- and had placed it on his bed, officials said. He then proceeded to sit down on the bed, "at which time one of his dogs jumped onto the bed," causing the weapon to fire a round into the man's lower back, officials said.

Possible that the man reloaded the gun - immediately following cleaning. (and left that little detail out of his 'account')
In any event - this individual is in the habit of keeping a loaded shotgun at the ready.

With the dog (following too many Clint Eastwood movies ..) all on board and taking that message to heart ...
(sorry - couldn't help myself)

But seriously, why would you clean a gun while it is loaded? That's just asking for trouble. Second, you never should leave a gun unattended, whether around pets or small kids.

It's easy to believe that some gun owners aren't practicing basic gun safety. Gotta keep it loaded, you know, for when the guv'ment comes in to try to take 'em, or so they're ready for when people whose complexion doesn't match theirs comes kicking down their doors, amiright?

I suppose a dog could hit the trigger when jumping on the bed. But I'm betting the dog didn't also disengage the safety at the same time.

I'm a 100% supporter of people finding out the hard way, as long as the direct consequences are limited to just them. Pity if this guy has already reproduced. More than anything, I hope the dog is okay. I hope the dude gets cited for his recklessness or animal endangerment or whatever, but fat chance of most of that.
