Fetterman hospitalized after fall near his Pennsylvania home

Washington Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has been hospitalized after a fall near his home, which caused minor injuries to his face, his spokesman said in a statement posted on social media.
Fetterman fell to the ground after feeling light-headed, which was due to a ventricular fibrillation flare-up, the statement said. Ventricular fibrillation is a type of irregular heartbeat. Fetterman is remaining at the hospital for observation so doctors can "fine-tune" his medications.
"During an early morning walk, Senator Fetterman sustained a fall near his home in Braddock," his spokesperson said. The statement continued: "Out of an abundance of caution, he was transported to a hospital in Pittsburgh. Upon evaluation, it was established he had a ventricular fibrillation flare-up that led to Senator Fetterman feeling light-headed, falling to the ground and hitting his face with minor injuries. Senator Fetterman had this to say: 'If you thought my face looked bad before, wait until you see it now!' He is doing well and receiving routine observation at the hospital. He has opted to stay so doctors can fine-tune his medication regimen. Senator Fetterman is grateful for the EMTs, doctors, and nurses who are providing his care."
Fetterman, a Democrat, experienced a stroke during his campaign for the Senate in 2022, and was also hospitalized in 2023 for feeling light-headed.

(68,568 posts)Every elected official - from sheriff to senator to president - is going to get complaints from constituents. It's one of the signs of a functioning democracy.
I really don't have time for politicians who whine that they're being criticized. It is part of the job they wanted.
When a politician starts complaining about feedback from their constituents it means it's time for them to get a new job.
I have never heard AOC complain about her constituents' comments to her. Nor have I heard Nancy Pelosi complain about this.

(32,005 posts)You need to resign, just as soon as possible. The people of Pennsylvania, and the people of the whole country, need the services of a for-real Democrat---not some trump apologist with a (D) by his name.

(848 posts). . . this was far from the case for me. Hundreds of papers to grade and provide feedback on at a time and lots of pressure from administration.
I was turned out, despite having tenure, due to a political purge by an incompetent GOP crony president.

My wife is a teacher. Over the years, Ive heard the Ive got soooooooo many papers to grade. In my early married years, I would suggest she not assign so much work that required grading. I no longer say anything.

Why don't they just put some band-aids on his face and send him home, like they would do with all the rest of us?????

(10,836 posts)... on "Morning Joe" this morning. I was struck by the background he chose... it was live, but he and the hosts were in separate studio/s. It looks like a dungeon... a couple walls that looked like a dungeon in a sad state of disrepair. It struck me that he often picks these sorry-looking backgrounds. maybe he really was in a dungeon, and fell walking back up? Certainly, he can afford the nice homes other guests use for their backgrounds. Still, I hope he recovers and enjoys a long, healthy retirement.

(503 posts)I seriously doubt I or most people I know would be given the option to stay in the hospital while our meds were fine tuned. Insurance would want a say in exactly what medication and what low cost version or treatments would be covered and probably deem it an out patient service in order to keep cost down.
Deminpenn
(17,167 posts)that federal civil servants and elected officials have the same insurance providers and options as every other American. Insurance can be through the ACA, FEHB or be on their spouse's insurance, which, iirc, Obama did even after he was elected.
If you use FEHB, the govt picks up about 75% of the policy premium. FEHB offers many different plans from self only to family and from very basic to very comprehensive.
There isn't some Cadillac insurance specifically for congress or federal employees.

(17,167 posts)based on the fact that a person is in congress or a federal civil servant.
It's simply not true that federal officials and civil servants have some sort of "cadillac" insurance. While elected officials do have the services of Walter Reed available to them when they are in DC, they see their own PCPs and specialists when they are back home. Fetterman has a cardiologist and probably has had one for awhile.

2. This is not a healthy man. He's only 56 and he's had a stroke and has atrial fibrillation?

(163,279 posts)No.
The Senate had already scheduled a "State Work Period" for this week (which included the Veteran's Day Holiday).

Once they finished their votes on the C.R. and 3 appropriations bills Monday, they were done for the rest of the week.

(1,499 posts)I say this with all honesty. Fetterman needs to resign. He should never have been seated in the first place. A stroke on the scale of what he experienced, doesn't just affect you physically, it impacts you mentally and emotionally. You suddenly realize just how close your mortality can be. It changes you on may levels, and it certainly changed him. His struggle to regain his stamina and faculties was not a short or easy process. And he has not completely recovered and never will, his journey will continue. He should have taken the high road and had the grace to admit that he was NOT the person the people of PA elected and resigned.
I wish him all the best. He needs to focus on his health and his family should be the support network that encourages him to be honest with himself.

Fetterman isn't a nuanced guy. He says what he thinks and believes what he believes. It's who he is. Pennsylvania will get to decide on his performance in a couple of years.

(1,206 posts)This is what leads to cardiac arrest and death. Its not the same as atrial fibrillation which a lot of people can live with. To me him being light headed and falling to the ground means his heart stopped.
Maybe a doctor around here can correct me if Im wrong.

A wake up call for John.
Pacemaker next?
He may need an ICD (implantable pacemaker-defibrillator combo) if he's got what I think he's got. The pace keeps the heartbeat steady. The defibrillator shocks the heart if the rhythm goes haywire.

He is 6'8" and I expect like many men of that height, there is probably a greater risk of cardiac issues (you hear about young basketball players suddenly dropping dead in their teens and twenties).

(2,247 posts)My father was a kind man, much kinder than I am or have ever been but when the sh*thead he worked for had a stroke, my father shocked me by saying "It could not have happened to better man" ... That is my sentiment regarding Fetterman but I am less kind, so I would include a "f*ck him to that he gets any sympathy. He's pretend Democrat with delusions of being "special" just because he cannot dress himself as an adult with delusions that, in the way he dresses as being a cool dude instead of the child he is. I would prefer he resigns and take better care of himself than he has the American people.
