Supreme Court Announces Major Schedule Updates

The Supreme Court said Wednesday it will hear arguments in January on two politically charged cases — one challenging the appointment of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and another involving transgender athletes’ participation in school sports.

Why It Matters

Both cases are expected to draw national attention and could have wide-ranging implications for the balance of power between state and federal authority.

West Virginia v. B.P.J: What to Know

The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on Tuesday, January 13, in West Virginia v. B.P.J., a closely watched case that will determine whether states can ban transgender girls from competing on female sports teams at public schools and universities. The case centers on a 13-year-old transgender student athlete, known by her initials B.P.J., who has challenged West Virginia’s 2021 law restricting participation in girls’ sports to those assigned female at birth. Lower courts have issued conflicting rulings on the law, with the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocking its enforcement earlier this year, prompting state officials to appeal to the high court.

The outcome could have sweeping implications for transgender rights and how Title IX — the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education — applies to gender identity. Supporters of West Virginia’s law argue it preserves fairness in women’s athletics, while opponents say it targets and excludes transgender youth in violation of constitutional and civil rights protections.

Donald J. Trump v. Lisa D. Cook: What to Know

One week later, on Wednesday, January 21, the court will hear arguments about whether Cook’s 2022 appointment to the Fed’s Board of Governors violated constitutional limits on presidential authority. President Donald Trump attempted to oust Cook before the September meeting of the Federal Reserve's interest rate-setting committee, but a judge ruled that the firing was illegal, and a divided appeals court denied the Trump administration's emergency appeal.
