President Trump has signed a bill to fund the government, bringing a close to the longest government shutdown in history, one that saw millions of Americans affected and ended with little political gain.
The bill passed Wednesday night despite Republicans' narrow margin in the House. Six Democrats joined their Republican colleagues to get the bill over the finish line 43 days after the shutdown began: Reps. Henry Cuellar of Texas, Don Davis of North Carolina, Adam Gray of California, Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, and Tom Suozzi of New York.
Two Republicans -- Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Greg Steube of Florida -- voted no. The final vote was 222 to 209.
In addition to extending last year's spending levels through the end of January for most of the government, the bill provides funding for some agencies through the end of next September, including payments for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The program, which provides food aid to nearly 1 in 8 Americans, has been mired in a court battle because of the shutdown.

(83 posts)I am glad that food for the poor wont be used as a bargaining chip next time. Im pretty upset about that. Healthcare is broken. And needs to be fixed.

The rich were not hurt and were not going to be hurt. Even if it went on for a hundred years.
The rich call the shots for Republicans. They hold every branch.
The rich get tax breaks at the expense of our lives.
The rich owned media got their message run over by our highlighting what they continue to sell.
The rich are trying to convince us we lost. We swept them. Keep sweeping.

(9,506 posts)One thing that they got was to screw over the cannabis industry because their liquor-producing friends, as well as certain irrational evangelicals and plenty of law enforcement agencies, paid enough to get them to do it. Now, a medication that has been used for thousands of years, and has helped untold thousands is now back off of the market and those who rely on it will have to figure out what to do.
I know that this seems like little or nothing to some, thanks in no small part to decades of misinformation and scapegoating the substance, but for some it is a matter of life and death.
Personally, if they want me to die so badly, they could at least just come on over and take care of it. Making me waste away slowly is just the 'bird flip' to me and those like me.
"Not only are we not going to help you, we are going to make it so you suffer horribly as you die. We get off on that kind of thing!
(But, we won't go remove them from office, so none of this matters. Those like me are just numbers to those who are playing the political game. We have little meaning other than our vote. If we did, this would not be happening.)
