Newsom at UN "Donald Trump is temporary"

“He wants to bring us back and try to recreate the 20th, maybe even try to recreate the 19th century,” Newsom said. “They’re doubling down on stupid as it relates to climate policy in my country, but not in my state.”

Newsom’s speech to an at-capacity room of local government representatives from around the world came during his first appearance at the annual climate talks, held this year in the Amazonian city of Belém, and underscored his effort to position California — and himself — as a counterweight to the Trump administration’s dismantling of climate policies at home and abroad. The total absence of any federal government officials at the talks only amplified the spotlight on Newsom, who was by default the highest-ranking government official from the U.S. there.

He has something VERY important that the donald has already squandered: time.

Newsom has many years ahead of him, to make whatever mark he wants to for the public good, AND for the protection of our planet.

Newsom has already established himself as a guiding light and at this point, the party’s leader. Following the election the party suffered from a huge leadership vacuum and he did a great job taking the mantle.

He has hit back in a way others have not managed. Partly it was due to his teams brilliant use of social media and the way he parodies Trump, but mainly it’s because he’s consistent and hasn’t held back. As slick as he may look, he feels more authentic as a politician than many others. Not sure if he’s my number one pick (another CA pol may be a tough sell for the country), but I’ve been increasingly impressed. He’s my governor, and he’s fought back a ridiculous recall effort and spearheaded prop 50, two of his major wins since I moved here
