Speaker Mike Johnson announced to reporters on Wednesday that he will put a bill compelling the Department of Justice to release all of its Jeffrey Epstein case files on the House floor next week earlier than expected.
Were going to put that on the floor for a full vote when we get back next week, Johnson said.
In the meantime Ill remind everybody the [House] Oversight Committee has been working around the clock on its own investigation, the speaker said.
Johnson is required to put the bill from Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna and GOP Rep. Thomas Massie on the floor soon, now that their discharge petition has reached 218 signatures.

(60,682 posts)It should easily pass, though it may be a damned if you do, damned if you don't vote for Republicans. It will be interesting to see if Trump can influence most of them.
In some ways, taking the vote is the important thing - especially as it will be tough to override Trump's veto.
However, the effort is likely why the Democrats put out 3 emails. The Republican response to dump 10s of thousands will likely backfire. (Oddly the Republicans forget that in a gesture to transparency, Clinton asked the State Department to process for redactions and put all her emails online. This was done in monthly tranches and led to the email story resurfacing every month. This is one dump, but I would bet we will see a long series of Epstein articles. )

(8,386 posts)say that we don't know how much info that was told to the FBI/Florida investigators didn't make it "into the files" for various reasons. Sometimes things aren't deemed relevant or credible and are not included or followed up on. Sometimes it can be deliberate omission for crooked reasons. That's one reason why the stories from the survivors are so important because they may have bits of info that are actually important and give more info but were not in the FBI/Florida files.
I also believe, given reporting about Epstein and Mossad and other foreign intelligence, that there is a CIA file on Epstein that may have much more of the story than is in the FBI/Florida files but we will likely never see that. Having said that I would also say that other countries intelligence agencies likely have files on Epstein given his activities internationally and those files may have info that CIA/FBI/Florida files do not have. Again we probably won't ever see those files either.
Seeing those additional files could really get deeply into the various international players and the money aspects. I wouldn't be surprised if the US Treasury Department has a file that goes beyond what has been released so far about bank alerts for transactions. There is so much blatant money laundering that goes on today and the tie in to Crumb the 1st and the Russian mob by way of all of the the 1000's of LLC's and high level prices/lending/sales on real estate is very strong.

(30,676 posts)Mikie Sherrill will still be seated, right?
If Johnson can stall until Christmas Mikie will be gone.

And if you are talking about Adelita Grijalva ((D-AZ), she was sworn in this afternoon! He can't stall too long per the Rules for discharge.

(60,682 posts)Sherrill will be sworn in in January, but I don't know when she intends to resign. I think when she resigns might affect when the special election will be set.

(163,346 posts)and one of the Vindman twins (Eugene) actually won her seat last year!
Sherrill only announced Wed. that she had planned to submit her resignation "next week", although apparently when/how that happens is up in there air (including the NJ legislature currently in the process of changing their cumbersome special election process to speed it up) - https://newjerseyglobe.com/congress/gov-elect-sherrill-plans-to-submit-letter-of-resignation-from-house-next-week/
Just like Elise Stefanik who plans to run for governor in NY next year, the party leadership on both sides, are juggling how to handle the Congressional voting ability for "early" departing members given how close the split is in the House.

No way is this going to be a clean vote. If it ever happens.

(193,912 posts)Im certain the House vote will succeed, Massie said in an interview. Some Republican members who are not signers of the petition have told me they will vote for the measure when the vote is called. I suspect there will be many more.
He added, I even wonder if Speaker Johnson might advise politically vulnerable members to vote for it.

(193,912 posts)Then its up to the Senate Republicans to carry Trumps water OR for him to veto it himself which will not be a good look at all.

The fix will be in what is actually released. My only hope is that the releases from Epstein's estate will force them to deliver all of the goods.
