'That's what happened!' Hearing erupts after GOP accused of using shutdown for 'vacation'

The marathon House Rules Committee on Tuesday night erupted after a Democratic lawmaker accused Republicans of using the eight-week government shutdown to take a vacation.
The committee met to debate a legislative package that would keep the government open through January 2026. Part of the package includes policy proposals like allowing Republican lawmakers to sue former special counsel Jack Smith because he subpoenaed their phone records as part of his investigation into the January 6 insurrection.
During the hearing, Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) and Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) got into a shouting match after Ansari accused Republicans of taking a vacation during the government shutdown. "Welcome back from your eight weeks of taxpayer-funded vacation," Ansari's opening statement began. "It's good to see you and I hope that you..."
Foxx interrupted Ansari before she could continue. "I'm so sick and tired of hearing you all say we had an eight-week vacation," Foxx said sternly. "That's exactly what happened!" Ansari shot back.

(10,957 posts)Sounds like a vacation to me. That is not counting the endless golf trips of the Orange blancmange.

(3,964 posts)If the Mara largo trips are being expensed. Would be a back door way of finding out what Trump is charging per visit.
Congressional expense reports should be part of the pubic record like every other federal worker drone. And if its not, then the next Congress should make it so, retroactively.

(6,266 posts)Nah, republicans don't feel guilty. They wouldn't do half the things they do if they felt any guilt. So, just touchy.

(21,957 posts)Rep. Foxx may not feel guilty, but she undoubtedly knows that a lot of Americans, no doubt including many of her constituents are upset about the shutdown, along with a lot of other things, from the price of eggs to the armed ICE goons that are beating people up and dragging them off to jail for the "crimes" of having brown skin or speaking Spanish in public. And she DID just have an 8 week paid vacation. She's mad because she'd rather not be reminded that voters have lots of reasons to be mad at her right now.

(998 posts)They simply don't have anything else to do. All they have to do, is precisely what they are told to do.....by 2025, Trump, etc......
Every morning they open their secretive email, and their marching orders for the day are given to them by StephenMiller/RussellVought INC.
Seriously less exhausting than being creative or having to think for themselves.......(a lot like some voters we know)
Not much different than their normal work weeks: Show up on Tuesday Afternoon, leave at noon on Thursday..........

Democrats cared, that's who.

(998 posts)in my opinion, we have not one, but two U.S. Senators that really haven't done much of anything, as far as I can tell.....We also have a U.S. House member here in Denver, who, as a dem, gets automatically re-elected regardless, who we don't hear much about either.
One of our U.S. Senators, has decided to add a new political feather to his cap, and is quitting the U.S. Senate and running for Governor.
Our governor, in my opinion, is a pro-corporate DINO, and is term limited......

(998 posts)changes are accelerating rapidly.........Denver's (and Colorado's) tax revenue is crashing, with massive shortages, putting the budget into serious RED territory.......Property taxes have increased dramatically the last 4 years, infrastructure maintenance is being neglected, traffic on interstates and freeways in Denver and surrounding areas is a nightmare. Twenty somethings can no longer afford a single family home.....
Our Home owner's insurance, and car insurance are some of the highest in the country. Denver ranks #1 in car thefts in the nation.....
It still is a great place to live......but regretfully, has become radically changed in the last ten years....and has accelerated incredibly....
Trump Inc has added a whole new dimension in getting far less money from the Federal Government in tons of different ways.....just because we are a serious BLUE City, and Somewhat a BLUE state, he has targeted our city/state along with many other BLUE cities/states.
An incredible amount of RED states, like 50% or more take much more money than they send in federal taxes.
And the BLUE states typically send far more than they receive, EVEN BEFORE Trump focused cuts towards the Blue states....and NOW the ratio is far worse, than it even was.....

I grew up around so many like her that there are times I hear them in my sleep.
(I, of course, was related to a number of them. Little dictators in small towns across the state, the lot of them. Never been anywhere but think they know everything. And people wonder why I moved from my town of 560 to 'the city' once I was able. "Well, no one is going to know who you are up there." "YES, That's the damned point!"
Trust me, no self-respecting harpy would go near her.

(2,224 posts)Elise Stefanik was running for Governor during that time. I'm sure she did not vacation the whole time.
She was not taking care of business for NY 21.
That was obvious to those of us in her district.
