Trump administration proposes new California offshore oil leases

Source: Yahoo News!

Tue, November 11, 2025 at 9:39 AM EST

The Trump administration plans to propose oil drilling leases off the coast of California, opening up the region within decades, according to a draft five-year plan seen by the Washington Post. The proposal outlines six lease sales in areas along the California coast between 2027 and 2030.

Final approval of the draft proposal is not expected for at least another year. Even after approval, it would likely be several more years before any new production could actually commence, reported the publication.

The proposal also includes potential lease sales in the eastern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) in 2029 and 2030, as well as more than 20 lease sales in offshore areas of Alaska through 2031.

Expanding the drilling initiative in the eastern GoM has faced resistance from Florida officials and residents due to concerns over oil spills and their impact on local tourism. The proposal for Alaska would open nearly all offshore areas to oil development, including the High Arctic.

Trump is hoping to bring back those disastrous oil spills of the past on the California coast in a vindictive move to ruin the state which does not support him. I wonder if he would be okay with oil rigs off the Florida coast near Mara Lago?

He was forced to pull THAT idea during his 1st term after FL complained and just did it this term, almost 2 weeks ago, after they basically said "fuck no"!

but production will never happen.

It will be cost prohibitive......after California is done with them.

The leases might include a time frame in which production must begin or the lease is forfeit......that's the magic number to shoot for.

This isn't a serious proposal---just more of trump's empty malevolence for California in general, and Governor Newsom in particular.

now they're intent on killing the rest of the waters. I do so hope Mother Nature rises up and gets them in some appropriate way.
