U.S. Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva is expected to be sworn in this week, ahead of the House vote on a government funding bill, Scripps News has confirmed.
Grijalva won a special election in Arizona's 7th congressional district in late September, but House Speaker Mike Johnson refused to swear her in. He said it was due to the House not being in session, which has been prolonged due to the government shutdown.
Grijalva publicly pushed back, noting that the House often holds pro forma sessions during shutdowns, brief meetings that allow members to conduct procedural business even when regular legislative work is paused.
She and the Arizona attorney general also filed a lawsuit against the U.S. House of Representatives seeking to ensure she is sworn in.

(163,346 posts)They only needed 4 (R)s to sign it and just needed 1 more (D) that was one of the vacant seats (Grijalva).
Here is a link to who signed - Motion to Discharge a Committee from the Consideration of a Resolution
Here is the Resolution that they want discharged from Committee for a floor vote - H.Res.581 - Providing for consideration of the bill (H.R. 185) to advance responsible policies.
The 4 (R)s who signed were -

MTG
Boebert (shocking)

(398 posts)The Senate did NOT pass the bill that the House passed, they made changes as part of the deal. Now the House has to vote on the deal. If he doesn't call the House back into session, the shutdown continues and everyone will see why.

(398 posts)Can't remember them all, but one of them is that SNAP is fully funded through the entire fiscal year, not just to the end of the CR in January. I think military pay and ATC pay were as well. Those provisions most definitely were not in the original CR passed by the House. The handshake agreement part was the vote in the Senate on the ACA tax credits, Mike Johnson has already refused to commit to a vote in the House on that. We can see where that is going to lead.

Spanberger will succeed Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a Republican who was barred from running again by state term limits."
I'm not sure of the date she resigned, but if it is recent, then this would now be an open seat, so a trade would leave them still one vote short.

(163,346 posts)She didn't run for reelection to Congress in 2024, so she is not a factor.
Here is the list of names of those who signed the discharge petition - https://clerk.house.gov/DischargePetition/2025090209
It includes 213 (D)s and 4 (R)s.

(163,346 posts)I was concerned that we were losing members who wanted to run for state offices... and especially HER seat - which was VA-7, and was originally the notorious Eric Cantor's seat before he was primaried by someone worse - a teabagger loon!!
One of the Vindman twins - Eugene, won that seat in 2024!!
