House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said on Sunday hes confident Democrats will take back the House in the 2026 midterm elections and is optimistic about his partys chances to win back control of the Senate, as well.
In an interview on NBC Newss Meet the Press, moderator Kristen Welker asked Jeffries about the Democrats sweeping successes in Tuesdays elections pointing to victories in New York City, New Jersey, Virginia and California and asked the Democratic leader how confident he is that Democrats can retake the House going into next years midterm elections.
Democrats are definitely going to take back control of the House of Representatives, Jeffries told Welker. And were going to stay focused on the issues that matter: lowering the high cost of living, fixing our broken health care system, and cleaning up corruption, to actually deliver a country that works for working-class Americans, for everyday Americans, and for middle-class Americans, he continued.
Jeffries noted that Democrats chances are stronger in the House, but he said he sees a viable path in the Senate to retake the majority next year. He pointed to other races last week that didnt get as much national attention but which, he said, also bode well for Democrats. I think that the results on Tuesday which were so decisive in the states that you mentioned, but also in Georgia, in Mississippi, in Pennsylvania, across the country, up and down the ballot including in races that didnt get the same level of attention shows that theres a real path, Jeffries said.

(163,346 posts)OH might also be a possibility if Sherrod Brown finds his lost voters (and there are a bunch of disenchanted there). IA also might be moving to toss-up after Ernst did her last castration - on her constituents.
(this is assuming we hold GA and NH as (D))

(8,386 posts)we don't deliver and if young voters see that delivery failure along with capitulating on things along the way.

(37 posts)As Gavin Newsom recently stated, the voters would rather have strong and wrong than right and weak. The senate democrats demonstrated once again last night that theyre weak and will capitulate to MAGA. When voters dont show up for democrats in the midterms, it can be traced to the events of last night. Its politically disastrous for democrats. Theres no other way to spin it, and it reinforces the perception that the democrats are weak and wont actually fight hard against Trump and the GOP.

(39,493 posts)I don't know what's going to happen in next year's primaries, but if things don't change from where we're headed now, there will be a lot of Repuke Representatives out of a job next November. I think that's what Jeffries is referring to, the House of Representatives. He doesn't have much say about the Senate anyway.

(1,351 posts)If the voters feel as frustrated and angry as I am after the wimpy caving of the Dem senators, then nothing can be assumed. It is imperative that we work our tails off convincing people to
get out and vote. And, trust me, the disgusting Republicans will do all they can to put as many obstacles as they are able to prevent us and discourage us from voting.

(3,465 posts)Until just a few minutes ago: I read that Chuck Schumer has sold out the public, and especially those who relied on tax subsidies for insurance through the ACAs marketplace. He CAVED on reopening the government
and like Charlie Brown trick-or-treating, all he got was (the equivalent of) a rock: Cave on the stopgap spending bill, and in return? A promise to hold a separate vote later/next week on renewing subsidies.
Guess what? That bill will be subject to filibuster, and the Reichwing sadists arent going to let people have affordable healthcare. And thats assuming that Thune (aka, Lucy) doesnt yank the football as Charlie tries to kick the ball.
Saw a meme that applies very well in this context:
Republicans would deny 99 people the benefits of X, Y and/or Z, etc., so as to prevent that one case of fraud. Democrats would tolerate that one case of fraud if it means 99 people get X, Y, Z.

(7,834 posts)But Democratic wins in CA, NY and NJ are not indicative of much in 2026. VA normally flip flops against the party in the White House, so that wasnt uncommon either.
Traditionally the party in the white house loses control of the House in the midterms lately though so thats a plus.
