Trump pardons Rudy Giuliani, other key figures allegedly involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election
Source: ABC
President Donald Trump issued a sweeping pardon to key figures allegedly involved in the plan to arrange an alternate slate of electors and "expose voting fraud" during the 2020 election, according to U.S. Pardon Attorney Ed Martin.
Trump pardoned high-profile individuals allegedly involved in his attempt to overturn the election, including Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, Boris Epshteyn, John Eastman and Mark Meadows -- and 72 other individuals allegedly associated with the effort to challenge the 2020 election results.
The pardon, which Trump appears to have signed on Friday, covers each of the president's co-defendants who were charged in Georgia for a sweeping scheme to overturn election results.
Four of the pardon recipients pleaded guilty in the Georgia case.

Important comments from Bluesky:
Butâ¦those are state charges. They were never federally charged. Nor could they be even if we win in 2028 because the statute of limitations will have expired. But okay.

Maybe this is a signal to future election criminals that theyâll be pardoned, too?

And there's a long thread from Anna Bower starting here:
Trumpâs pardon attorney Ed Martin claims Trump is pardoning his Georgia co-defendants and other âalternate electors.â

Note: Trumpâs Georgia co-defendants are charged under state law. The president canât pardon people for state crimes.

(13 posts)Or just the right amount of cynical because it is Trump after all?
Maybe he wanted them to sweat a little so they'd be more grateful.

(3,160 posts)1. As heinous as these pardons are, they don't change the outcome of the 2020 election.
2. The fact of these pardons further shows that Trump and Company have ever intention of rigging the 2026 and 2028 elections.
Remember -- Trump told an audience during the 2024 campaign "Vote this year and you won't have to vote ever again."

(154 posts)A president fond of the grand,
Decreed with a flourish of hand,
Forgive all my crew,
The red, white, and true
Except me (for now), understand?
Said Rudy, with a grin slightly wan,
I knew Don would right every wrong!
Though charged he was not,
He still liked the spot
A pardon looks good in a song.
Mark Meadows, with cautious delight,
Declared, I was never indicted, right?
But hell frame that decree,
Hang it up by the tree,
And toast to the boss every night.
Powell and Eastman and Clark,
Lit sparks in the post-vote dark.
They plotted and pled,
While facts quietly bled
Now pardoned, they stroll in the park.
The electors who claimed they were real,
Signed papers with counterfeit zeal.
Theyre free from D.C.,
But the states disagree
So justice still clings to their heel.
Poor Tinas still locked in her cell,
Her breach didnt go over well.
Hero! said Don,
As the judge droned on
Nine years till Peters rings her next bell.
Said Martin, with bureaucrat grace,
Ive posted the listfour-page space!
Wheres Tina? one cried,
He calmly replied,
Were working that casewatch this place.
When Trumps second terms nearly gone,
Hell muse as the cameras are on:
I pardoned my friends,
But before this all ends
Perhaps I should give me one.

(52,783 posts)I think we've already determined that Trump can't issue pardons that actually pardon anyone in this case because the charges are state-level and presidents can only pardon over federal charges.
So, is this what Trump's trying for?
1. Trump pardons all his people who were charged in Georgia.
2. The State of Georgia tells Trump that's not how it works; he can't pardon people who weren't charged federally.
3. Trump runs to his Supreme Court to get the law that says presidents can't pardon state-level offenses overturned.
4. When they do, he starts issuing own-the-libs pardons like one for Derek Chauvin, the former police officer who murdered George Floyd.
