California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) slammed President Trump on Saturday while attending a rally to rail against Texass successful redistricting efforts. Were dealing with an invasive species by the name of Donald Trump, Newsom told the crowd in Houston. He is an historic president, however. A historically unpopular president, under every key category, he added.
Trumps approval rating has been falling during his second stint in office. A CNN/SSRS poll released Monday showed 37 percent of American respondents approve of the job Trumps doing in the Oval Office, while 63 percent said they disapprove. Recent polling also shows large shares of Americans blame the president and the Republican Party for the government shutdown.
Newsom has long feuded with the president, but the beef intensified earlier this year when Trump refused to meet with him amid the California wildfires. The California governor has ramped up his criticism ahead of midterm elections with the goal of helping Democrats regain a majority in the House.
We cannot rest until we take it back, Newsom said on Saturday. There is no more important race in our lifetime than the House of Representatives and taking back the House.
