'For Trump?!' Leader of law firm that struck deal with president 'heckled' at big speech

Paul Weiss chairman Brad Karp was reportedly "heckled" during his speech at a New York Bar Foundation event on Friday, just seven months after striking a controversial deal with Donald Trump's administration.
Social media critics expressed outrage in March and accused a lawyer from the powerful law firm of "capitulating" to Trump. Trump withdrew an executive order that rescinded security clearances from the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison after Trump met with Karp, and they came to an agreement, with the firm pledging $40 million worth of pro bono legal services during Trump's presidency.
That outrage apparently hasn't died down, according to Law.com's reporting from a recent speech where there was protesting and heckling.
Quoting Karp as saying, "We were targeted by the current administration, in large part because of our lawyers high profile work on pro bono matters, we ultimately resolve that existential threat, and I'm proud to say that our pro bono work on critically important matters continues today," the outlet notes, "Karp's comments at the foundation's 75th anniversary event, however, did not go unchecked."

(803 posts)They are a M&A firm. I know I work in big legal and I called them last Friday. Some of their top partners left. I literally had an exchange with their former head of the pro bono practice 2 weeks ago.

(41,995 posts)I found this article at the NYTimes from Aug. 20, 2025. One recipient is the Commerce Dept.
It's important to note that other firms fought and won--resoundingly. These jerks didn't need to work a deal with trump.

But as the deals were being reached, Mr. Trump told reporters that he thought the pro bono work could be used toward his administrations trade deals and even representing him in a personal capacity.
The deals were widely criticized in the legal community as unconstitutional, unethical and undemocratic. The four firms that chose to fight the administrations executive orders in court have all won sweeping legal victories.
Pro bono legal work traditionally has involved work for the indigent or groups seeking to defend a threatened constitutional right. After Mr. Trumps crackdown on the legal profession, some big firms even some that did not settle with the administration have chosen to avoid high-profile pro bono cases out of fear of angering the president.
The Commerce Department is not only taking an active role in trade and tariff negotiations but also discussing taking equity stakes in some U.S. companies like the chip maker Intel.
