GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she took the train instead of a flight from Washington to her home state of Georgia because of "flight delays and cancellations" as the government shutdown disrupts hundreds of flights and snarls travelers' plans.
"Due to flight delays and cancellations, I took the Amtrak train from DC to Georgia," Greene posted to X alongside a video of "the morning views of my north Georgia mountains."
Airlines have announced hundreds of government-mandated flight cancellations in the past two days as a result of the shutdown, which has sent airport workers and air traffic controllers home without pay.

Proposed Cuts: In both fiscal year 2024 and 2025, House Republicans on the Appropriations Committee advanced budget proposals that included massive cuts to Amtrak, including a proposed 64% reduction for the national network and a over 90% cut to the Northeast Corridor in one instance.

Remember how Biden would talk about himself taking Amtrak to Washington?

(12,811 posts)There is an Amtrak station in my home town in Arkansas and my destination in Wisconsin.
Out of curiosity, I tried to check the Amtrak website to see how long the trip would take and the cost I gave up. The Amtrak website is unusable.

(1,022 posts)Im not sure exactly where in Wisconsin you are going but I have taken the train several times between St. Louis and Milwaukee and its not a bad trip. You have to switch trains in Chicago but there are several trains going between Chicago and Milwaukee a day and there is easy transportation to the Milwaukee airport where you can rent a car to go wherever. In our case we were driving to Door county.

Agreed. The last place you want to go if you're looking into taking the train is the Amtrak website.
To see how a train is doing, start here:
https://asm.transitdocs.com/
You can find Amtrak timetables as they would appear in orint here:
https://juckins.net/amtrak_timetables/index.php
Here's the schedule for the Texas Eagle as it would appear in a print timetable.

The Borealis and Empire Builder are here:

Edited to add: I left out the Hiawatha service. The Hiawathas all stop at the airport.

(12,811 posts)Surely Amtrak's website could be set up like the airline's. I should be able to enter the departure station, the destination station, and the travel date; and the website show me what is available.
Travel by Amtrak is problematic enough with the long travel times and the arrival/departure times being unreliable. It would be really helpful if Amtrak's website moved into the late 20th Century.

(1,022 posts)Try downloading the app then click on book and it is set up more like what you are looking for. Maybe I just have no problem because I have used it a lot. I find the overall network map helpful so I can see everywhere it goes

(12,811 posts)There is an Amtrak station blocks from my house. There is an Amtrak station where I'm going. The app denies that I can get there from here. At least I got the answer quickly.

(1,022 posts)Sometimes you can theoretically get someplace but if it is a connecting train depending on times you may either just miss your connection or have to wait many hours since often a route only has one or two trips per day, not like a plane that may have several. Sometimes it makes sense to just get somewhere close and rent a car and drive the rest of the way.
