Jeff Flake: GOP 'migration' away from Trump has started

Source: The Hill

11/06/25 4:52 PM ET

Former Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said he believes the Republican Party is beginning to move away from President Trump, citing pockets of dissent within the party and the recent poor performances of GOP candidates in downballot races.

“In politics, migrations rarely happen all at once. They start quietly — one or two members of a herd moving toward safer ground while the rest pretend not to notice. But once the wind really changes, the movement becomes unmistakable,” Flake wrote in an op-ed published in The Washington Post on Thursday. “I believe that a migration has begun within the Republican Party,” he continued.

Flake, who was fiercely critical of Trump during his first administration, said he sees the “first signs” of fractions emerging in the GOP. He pointed to Republican senators’ opposition to Trump’s call to end the filibuster. He also noted Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) vocal criticism of Trump’s tariff policies and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) public break with the president on several issues.

While Flake noted Greene’s independent streak might not last forever, “even a temporary defection signals to others that it can be done,” and “It gives cover to those who have privately questioned the direction of the party but have been unwilling to say so aloud.” “The political climate that once rewarded absolute loyalty to the president is shifting,” he continued. “The Democratic landslide in Tuesday’s off-year elections will only add momentum to that.”

Will the GOP pivot toward a more moderate, pragmatic leader, or continue doubling down on the same losing formula of bombast, outrage, and chaos? It feels to me like Trump may have entered the lame-duck phase of his influence this past week, and I suspect that once the holidays pass, the party will begin reassessing its direction and leadership choices. At this point, though, I’ve lost any real sense of where they’ll land... the signals are so mixed that even guessing feels futile. The GOP’s next move seems less like a strategy to me and more like a roll of the dice.

These people are "political animals" and a 45 is a once-in-a-generation bizarre phenomena. IMHO, Vance is a DOA successor.

Since the MAGats were born out of the "Freedom Caucus" (in quotes) that was birthed out of the teabaggers, they will probably go back to those teabaggers to recruit someone.

I wouldn't be surprised if people like Ron Johnson or "arch-conservatives" like Tom Cotton and James Lankford, might try. They would appeal to the more "establishment" GOPers from the pre-MAGat era.

Oddly, DeSatan has been quiet and he might try to make another run at it too in order to pick up the MAGat base. Similarly, Carnival Cruz.

With 45 (probably not on the ballot), it is open season.

The GOP remains firmly in TSF's control. None of them has any real spine, even the ones mentioned. MTG is just looking for headlines.

It is so rare for republicans to pull away from the herd, but I'm sure there is a lot of talk behind closed doors. Meanwhile, I think many of them were just waiting for someone else to make the first move. Once they realize that the sky didn't fall in, I believe more will follow.

Also, they can see what we see when Trump is on their television screens and undoubtedly realize the man won't be around long enough to make their lives a holy hell.

He is one and they are many. Yet they are so damn afraid of him. How many of them are under his blackmail I wonder...

It is so unlike anything I've seen before. Republicans do tend to stick together, but there have always been some outliers who won't just go along to get along. Yes, I do believe many have been blackmailed (perhaps courtesy of Putin) and others are probably afraid for their own safety and that of their families.

The rest just can't not follow for some reason, though I think a lot of them know their days in congress are numbered.
