Latino voter shifts in Tuesday's elections alarm some Republicans

Source: NBC News

Nov. 6, 2025, 4:38 PM EST

Republicans have spent a year cheering President Donald Trump’s gains among Latino voters in November 2024. Now, Democrats’ big wins among Latino voters this week have some Republicans sounding the alarm.

“This is a wake-up call for the GOP,” Rep. Maria Salazar, R-Fla., told NBC News.

Democrats’ double-digit victories in governor’s races in New Jersey and Virginia, as well as wins in other elections in New York City and California, were driven in part by high levels of support among Latino voters.

Latino voters supported the Democratic candidates this year by at least double-digit margins, according to NBC News exit polling. Latino men, who broke for Trump last year, according to the 2024 exit polls, favored the Democrats in each of the races where exit polling was conducted on Tuesday. In the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial contests, two-thirds of Latino voters supported the Democratic candidates.

He started his campaign calling Mexicans murders and racists and that alone should have disqualified him from any Latino voting for him! I wish the Harris campaign had run ads on Spanish language tv the video of him saying this to remind them what a pos he is and how he really feels about their community!

Texas assumed the Rs had the Latino vote locked in and if they didn’t it would bite them in the butt. Fingers crossed.

Trump's campaign did a good job (barfed a little when I wrote that) convincing voters that he was the "common sense" candidate and Harris was "extreme."

The portrayal worked, even though it was the opposite of reality. Some people will never wake up. Others knew all along who Trump is and don't care (a lot of right-wing so-called Christians in that group, some of the biggest hypocrites I've ever met).

But millions of voters just didn't bother to become fully informed. They watched the TV ads during Monday night football and voted against the "scary communist DEI lady who wants to give all our money to illegal gangsters because she's crazy." That's how she was portrayed and we failed to refute it.

Because they never realized the underlying white supremacist basis for much of what he is doing and up until now, they were treated and courted as "honorary whites" (remember they are basically a "language group" with multiple ancestral ethnicities and nationalities).

Then all that came crashing down.

They are raised Catholic, so they've bought in to the whole bogus "family values" bullshit spouted by the GOP, as well as the anti-abortion agenda.

There is a strong misogynistic vein in male Latino machismo, so they really vibe with that part of the GOP as well.

that people have a problem seeing their family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors being drug away by masked men probably never to be seen again. Funny how people react to acts of violence against those looking for a better life for themselves and theirs. The sense of Familia is strong in the Latin community and when one hurts one of the family, they have hurt all.
