Popular weight-loss drugs could cost a lot less soon in U.S.
Source: Desert News
Drug manufacturers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have reached a deal with the Trump administration to drop prices on wildly popular obesity drugs for Medicare, Medicaid and private-pay Americans, the president announced Thursday.
The deal cut with the two companies will reduce consumer cost of Zepbound and Wegovy, as well as pill forms of two other GLP-1 obesity drugs. The New York Times reported that obesity drugs in pill form are expected to win regulatory approval in coming months.
The lowest price, of $150 a month, will be available only for the lowest doses of the pill form of the drugs. When those drugs reach the market, Medicare and Medicaid will pay that price, as will Americans using their own money to buy the pills directly from manufacturers, the Times reported.
The Trump administration said coverage of the injectable forms of Wegovy and Zepbound would also be more available for those on the two government-sponsored health insurance programs and will decrease what those programs pay. Those measures are likely to expand access but still will stop far short of covering all the millions of people with obesity under those federal programs, the Times article said.

(7,408 posts)Stop eating those too big too unhealthy meals!
Less meat, more fresh vegetables!
And get high fructose corn syrup out of everything!
Walk more, drive less!
Tax the corn syrup, tax sugar, tax those fast food places that don't care if you die soon!

Keep doing what you are doing, just take the drug.
Big pharma approves.
'Cured' my type 2 diabetes by losing 30 pounds.
And clothes fit better.

(12,445 posts)You only needed to lose 30 pounds. Try 100 or more. It's not that easy.

(1,720 posts)Metabolism is highly individualized. Obesity science (and yes, Im a biochemist/toxicologist) has demonstrated that it is not all calorie in vs calorie out
I raise vorstehund dogs. I have a male who eats 6 cups a day and stays a little thinner than I prefer condition. I have a female who eats three cups a day and is perfect. I have a female who eats 2 cups a day and is fat. All dogs are exercised HARD. All eat very good premium kibble. All are closely related and about the same structure. I literally add fiber to my one females food to try to keep her less hungry.

changing those habits is the real key to natural long-term weight management

to be so smugly superior and to know exactly what other peoples lived experience is better than they do. As we know, all human bodies work in precisely the same manner; thats why we all look the same, behave alike, and get identical diseases.
I swear to fucking Christ, the lack of empathy here sometimes makes me think Ive accidentally wandered into Republican Underground.

Sedentary lifestyle, eating out of boredom?
Emotional eating? Feel bad, eat something but not really hungry, feel better?
Might be that a blood test or two are in order? Underactive thyroid, slow metabolism?

For the most part. Obesity is a disease and it needs lifelong treatment. Its not about willpower. People are assholes when it comes to weight and say things about obese people that they would NEVER say to an alcoholic.

(79 posts)GLP1 drugs have been a livesaver - literally - for me. They are a miracle.
For those of you who consider obesity some sort of moral failing - shame on you.
It's pretty simple, actually. Everyone's body doesn't process food the same. I could eat only lettuce leaves and plain chicken breasts for months and not lose a pound (ask me how I know).
I have been on a GLP-1 since 2022 with zero side effects. I have lost 185 lbs. I have also eliminated the need for many other medications.
I will forever be on these drugs, and will happily pay the price. I am fortunate that my employer's insurance offers coverage.

(12,445 posts)I'm also about 2 months into Zepbound. I have literally tried everything short of having the gastric bypass to lose weight. I have been obese all of my life. Even with strict keto dieting and exercise, I was unable to get down to what society considered a "healthy" weight.
Ignore the fat shamers here. Anti-fat prejudice is the last acceptable form of discrimination. Even here on DU. Especially here on DU.

(400 posts)I was doing weight watchers and miraculously the weight just came off. Turns out I had an autoimmune disease and that is why I was losing weight. Once the doctors had successfully treated the disease and I was healthy again the weight came right back.
I am done with diets. Yes I am overweight but since I walk 6 miles a day everyday my doctor says not to worry about my weight since all my vitals are fine.
You can be overweight and still be healthy.
