WASHINGTON Supreme Court justices on both ends of the political spectrum on Wednesday appeared to be skeptical of President Donald Trump's authority to impose sweeping tariffs on imports under a law designed for use during a national emergency.
The Trump administration is defending the president's signature economic policy before the high court on Wednesday. Oral arguments are ongoing.
The Supreme Court has a 6-3 conservative majority that has regularly backed Trump on various contentious cases since he took office in January, but many legal observers think the tariffs dispute is a close call.
The consequences are huge for Trump and the economy at large, with Americans increasingly anxious amid signs that the tariffs are contributing to, rather than alleviating, higher costs.

That leaves Roberts. He desperately hopes that history looks well on his stint as chief justice. He cant save Trump at this point. He didnt appear willing to try.

(172 posts)While Congress can delegate some of this authority to the president through legislation, particularly during national emergencies, the power to tax remains fundamentally a congressional one.
