Government shutdown set to become longest ever after latest Senate vote fails

Source: CNBC

Published Tue, Nov 4 2025 1:10 PM EST | Updated 16 Min Ago

The ongoing U.S. government shutdown is about to become the nation’s longest federal funding lapse ever. The shutdown is poised to hit that milestone on Wednesday, marking its 36th day and surpassing the previous record, which was set in early 2019.

The latest attempt to break the logjam, by getting a Republican-backed stopgap measure passed by Congress, failed in the Senate for the 14th time on Tuesday. There are no further votes scheduled Tuesday on the GOP’s short-term continuing resolution, or on an alternative proposal put forward by Democrats, which includes additional spending on health care and other priorities.

Both of the longest government shutdowns in U.S. history occurred while President Donald Trump was in office. The funding dispute centers on enhanced tax credits for insurance premiums under the Affordable Care Act, which are set to expire by year’s end, threatening to significantly hike health care costs for millions of Americans.

Democrats have refused to vote for any “clean” stopgap resolution that does not address those subsidies. Republicans have rejected the prospect of negotiating while the government remains shut down. While Republicans hold a narrow majority in the Senate, they need Democratic votes to overcome the chamber’s 60-vote threshold.

On the whole, I'd rather not be. Or as WC Fields put it, I'd rather be in Philadelphia.

Come on, Congress, solve this thing. Get us back to work.

which is HOW THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO THE APPROPRIATIONS.

They can pass a couple that have bipartisan agreement and brings those employees back. But they want "all" (their way) or "nothing".

Certainly Chump is a total washout, and Mike Johnson has shown that he can't lead his way out of a paper bag.

The Democrats have worthy leaders but none of our guys want to go in and solve THEIR problems for them. They have to figure it out. They have to stop blaming Democrats and do the necessary work.

I know one thing for certain: If Nancy Pelosi were Speaker, it never would have gotten here.

"The Congress shall assemble at least once in every year, and such meeting shall be on the first Monday in December, unless they shall by law appoint a different day."

They publish their meeting schedules and are meeting much more than "once a year" nowadays, where I think that reference to "December 1st" was for the 1700s era as sort of a minimum "mandatory" day assuming they don't meet the rest of the year.

The House is currently doing "every 3-day gavel in/gavel out" "Pro Forma" sessions, so they are still supposedly "in session" but are obviously thwarting any real business during those brief sessions before they recess "Subject to the Call of the Chair". The Senate has been generally meeting but with not more than a 3-day gap unless they institute their "Pro Forma" process.

In the Constitution (the clause just below that referenced one about December 1st) -

Article I

(snip)

Section 5.

(snip)

Neither House, during the session of Congress, shall, without the consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days, nor to any other place than that in which the two Houses shall be sitting.

(snip)

Thus the "Pro Forma" sessions.

Let the private meetings begin and start talking about the Final Solution: Article 25.
He's the Worst President Ever, and even the Repukes think so, at this point.
