Trump Demands GOP Kill Filibuster to Secure Permanent Republican Power

Source: Mediaite.com

President Donald Trump urged Republicans to “terminate the filibuster” to enact sweeping conservative policies and prevent Democrats from winning future elections — framing the Senate rule as the only barrier between the GOP and guaranteed dominance.

In a lengthy Truth Social post on the first election day since he won the popular vote, Trump claimed that without abolishing the 60-vote threshold, “nothing will be passed” for three years and Republicans will be “blamed” — warning that Democrats would win the midterms and “the next Presidential Election.”

Trump asserted that ending the filibuster would allow Republicans to pass “EVERYTHING,” including legislation to restrict transgender participation in sports, expand gun rights, slash taxes, and enforce stricter border policies. He also claimed — without evidence — that Democrats would otherwise “IMMEDIATELY” eliminate the Second Amendment, add two new states to secure four more Democratic senators, pack the Supreme Court, and gain additional Electoral College votes.

Trump posted on Truth Social: "The Democrats are far more likely to win the Midterms, and the next Presidential Election, if we don’t do the Termination of the Filibuster (The Nuclear Option!), because it will be impossible for Republicans to get Common Sense Policies done with these Crazed Democrat Lunatics being able to block everything by withholding their votes. FOR THREE YEARS, NOTHING WILL BE PASSED, AND REPUBLICANS WILL BE BLAMED. Elections, including the Midterms, will be rightfully brutal. If we do terminate the Filibuster, we will get EVERYTHING approved, like no Congress in History. We will have FAIR, FREE, and SAFE Elections, No Men in Women’s Sports or Transgender for Everybody, Strong Borders, Major Tax and Energy Cuts, and will secure our Second Amendment, which the Democrats will also terminate, IMMEDIATELY. If we don’t do it, they are far more likely to do well in the upcoming Elections, which would mean a PACKED Supreme Court, 2 more States and 4 more Democrat Senators (D.C. and Puerto Rico), and 8 more Electoral Votes. Remember, Republicans, they are going to end the Filibuster as soon as they get the chance We know this because they already tried, and the only two people who didn’t go along are now out of office. But they have much less chance of WINNING if we have Great Policy Wins after Wins after Wins. IN FACT, THEY WILL LOSE BIG, AND FOR A VERY LONG TIME. TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER NOW, END THE RIDICULOUS SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATELY, AND THEN, MOST IMPORTANTLY, PASS EVERY WONDERFUL REPUBLICAN POLICY THAT WE HAVE DREAMT OF, FOR YEARS, BUT NEVER GOTTEN. WE WILL BE THE PARTY THAT CANNOT BE BEATEN – THE SMART PARTY!!! "

In the long term, this would destabilize governance, major policy swings with each party’s control would then undermine legal consistency, inflame polarization, and further weaken public trust in institutions... just what Putin and his minion, monkey-boy trump, wants.

The Supreme Court will do its part by gutting the Voting Rights Act.

Republicans at the state level will contribute by disenfranchising minority/Democratic voters via redistricting/gerrymandering, eliminating voting venues, and placing discriminatory requirement to register to vote.

Trump and Republicans are serious about establishing an American manifestation of Apartheid.

It will, however, make Republicans completely accountable for all the destruction during the Trump era.

And once Dems are back in power, they can expand the court and ram through progressive bill after bill that restores democracy, protects rights, and improves the lives of all Americans, which the voters will reward them with majorities for the foreseeable future.

DO IT!

Krasnov and his Magat cult do not want the shutdown to end.

Congressional Magats don't know what to do, they expected Democrats to cave. Stay strong Dems, today's election results will scare the fuck out of them.

2 republicans voted to impeach Trump, and several have conveyed enough dismay at the current problems that they probably arent going to oblige to full autocracy.
Likely split until 2027 is 220 to 215. When the next two Dems are sworn in they cant afford to lose 3 defections on anything.

people at DU were calling on the Senate Democratic majority to kill the filibuster in order to stop Republican obstruction. That's the thing about this issue. Killing it would help the current party in power but under our two party system no party stays in power forever and when the party loses power then they will need the filibuster again. That's why Senate Republican leaders are defying Trump and refusing to eliminate it. They know they won't stay in power forever and they will need to use the filibuster when they become a minority again..

Trump ramps up pressure on his own party to nix the filibuster as shutdown drags on

After meeting with Trump, some Republican senators appear more open to nuking the 60-vote filibuster rule. But GOP Leader John Thune says, "It's just not happening."

Trump pushes GOP senators to eliminate filibuster as shutdown becomes longest in history

Nov. 5, 2025, 1:20 PM CST

By Scott Wong, Brennan Leach, Frank Thorp V and Sarah Dean

WASHINGTON — After Democrats’ triumphant election night, President Donald Trump on Wednesday morning conceded that his party is shouldering more of the blame for the government shutdown.

.................

That demand is putting Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and other GOP leaders in an awkward spot. Thune and many other senators oppose terminating the filibuster, an arcane procedural tool that empowers the minority party to delay or block a piece of legislation they oppose.

Getting rid of it would help Republicans in the short term, but many in the party have warned that getting rid of the filibuster could come back to bite them if Democrats return to power in the Senate.

.........................

“It’s time for Republicans to do what they have to do, and that’s terminate the filibuster,” Trump told GOP senators in public remarks over breakfast at the White House on Wednesday. “It’s the only way you can do it. And if you don’t terminate the filibuster, you’ll be in bad shape. We won’t pass any legislation.”.........................
