Dick Cheney, Americas most powerful modern vice president and chief architect of the war on terror, who helped lead the country into the ill-fated Iraq war on faulty assumptions, has died, according to a statement from his family. He was 84. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed, the family said, adding that he died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.
Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing, the family added.
We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.
The 46th vice president, who served alongside Republican President George W. Bush for two terms between 2001 and 2009, was for decades a towering and polarizing Washington power player. In his final years, however, Cheney, still a hardline conservative, nevertheless became largely ostracized from his party over his intense criticism of President Donald Trump whom he branded a coward and the greatest-ever threat to the republic.

Dick Cheney, Americas most powerful modern vice president and chief architect of the war on terror, who helped lead the country into the ill-fated Iraq war on faulty assumptions, has died, according to a statement from his family. He was 84.
In an ironic coda to a storied political career, he cast his final vote in a presidential election in 2024 for a liberal Democrat, and fellow member of the vice presidents club, Kamala Harris, in a reflection of how the populist GOP had turned against his traditional conservatism.
Cheney was plagued by cardiovascular disease for most of his adult life, surviving a series of heart attacks, to lead a full, vigorous life and lived many years in retirement after a heart transplant in 2012 that he hailed in a 2014 interview as the gift of life itself.

stating an absolute LIE, just like Cheney/Rumsfeld's lie to take us into a disastrous war which only benefited the monstrous Industrial Military Complex, and Cheney's last employer: Halliburton Oil.....
Rumsfeld's famous quote: "The war will be over in three days, costing us only three Billion dollars, and that the Iraq people will gladly reimburse us from THEIR oil reserve's revenue......The Iraq people will line the streets, throwing flowers at our soldiers as they parade by"
Obviously the war wasn't over in three days,....... the last estimates of the actual, factual cost of the war is so far Two Trillion dollars,...... Cheney and other Major Oil companies divided up the oil in Iraq for themselves,...... and all the streets in Iraq cities were bombed into oblivion so the people couldn't line the streets throwing flowers at our conquering soldiers.......

(8,702 posts)they loved America but they were convinced there would be another Hitler and prepared for it...my father had a clothing store and every spare dollar went into buying gold coins and diamonds...before we moved into our new house , my father paid the guy who poured the slab to drill small craters into the cement in what would be our bedrooms..after we moved in and the carpet was laid, my father cut out the pieces of carpet that covered the holes and filled them with coins, jewels, and money...he then covered the holes and dragged our beds over the carpet...I asked him why he did that and he explained that when, not if, someone like Hitler took control of America, the stash would be used to bribe the soldiers, allowing us to make our escape...
to us Dick Cheney was the epitome of evil but that was then and this is now..he's been Trumped...

(112,136 posts)Intense anger and disgust at Cheney during GW Bush* "war on terror," but in comparison to the Fascists in the WH and Congress (and against late-stage Cheney warned and railed against), my views have (slightly) moderated--at least for end-stage Cheney.
I'll never lose my view of him as a very negative version of "Darth Vader," in office and I had a burning hatred toward him then, but he (with Liz) presented a very different persona in late life. Perhaps it was the soul of the heart he acquired.
You put into graceful words the conflict I feel about Cheney.
It's was surprising to say the least that one of the meanest V.P.s, Cheney, and one of the dumbest V.P.s, Quayle, actually finally both did the right thing for their country on January 6. They used their remaining connections in Washington to play at least some part in thwarting tsf's attempted coup.
Sadly their former Republican supporters didn't follow their lead, and put tsf back in office in 2024. I didn't forget the bad stuff Cheney did in office, but it has always been said you should at least find one good thing to say about those people you don't like. So this is that one good thing for Darth Cheney.
I am likely never going to be able to find anything good to say about tsf or anyone else in his regime though.

(3,029 posts)... that Cheney and Rumsfeld were avid proponents of "The Unitary Executive," which was a cynical euphemism for dictatorship. Project 2025 was the logical extension of that diseased concept.
I almost did a spit-take with my coffee when I read, "...he was a great and good man". No, he was not. Letting tunnel vision focused on familial relations to the exclusion of the monstrous harm he did is not an accurate measure of his character. The fullness of the evil he perpetrated completely overshadows any momentary lapses wherein he was nice to his own family. Millions of families here and around the world will remember him quite differently.

(163,346 posts)right during the pandemic. In that case, they delayed any services due to the pandemic and eventually had a memorial service in MN.
Of the previous VPs in the last century or so who have passed, one - Humbert Humphrey - did lie in state in the Capitol. Earlier ones like the first 2 under FDR, had memorial services and/or regular funerals in their home states.
Other former (modern) VPs were all eventually elected or had ascended to the Presidency at some point and had a state funeral as a former President (i.e., Truman, Nixon, Johnson, Ford, Poppy Bush). There are still a bunch of VPs (including a former one who became President) still around - Quayle, Gore, Biden, Harris.
