Two men who had acquired high-powered weapons and practiced at gun ranges were scouting LGBTQ+ bars in suburban Detroit for a possible attack....
Momed Ali, Majed Mahmoud and co-conspirators were inspired by the Islamic State group’s extremism, according to a 72-page criminal complaint unsealed in federal court.

that suggest it's meant to cover their own feelings and convince others (themselves? their deity?) how straight they are and that weird dream he had, or that one drunken sleep-over didn't really mean anything.

Though it may be harder to determine which is truly antecedent, i.e. whether it's The Duck, or The Egg?

Like you'd ever expect their lawyers to go public and say exactly how guilty they were.

We'll see if due process in court holds up better than due process in the media has.
