Donald Trump Suggests He Will Cut Down Funding to New York if Mamdani Wins

Source: Newsweek

Published Nov 03, 2025 at 02:38 AM EST updated Nov 03, 2025 at 03:59 AM EST

U.S. President Donald Trump said New York City's federal funding would be at risk if it elects the democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as mayor.

Speaking during a 60 Minutes interview that aired Sunday, Trump called Mamdani—who is currently well ahead in the polls and looks set to win the mayoral election—a "communist," adding that "it's gonna be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York.” Trump said: “Because if you have a communist running New York, all you're doing is wasting the money you're sending there.”

Mamdani has campaigned on proposals he says would make the city more adorable, including free bus service, universal child care, and a rent freeze for stabilized apartments. Newsweek contacted the White House and Mamdani’s campaign for comment via email outside regular business hours on Monday.

Why It Matters

Any cuts to funding would have an impact since federal grants are a major source of revenue for America’s largest city, supporting a number of essential services and programs. It could mean less money for public hospitals, the transit system, public safety and education.

We will see caravans of liberals, foreign born citizens, and people of color forming caravans in their moves to central America, in their moves to the more affordable towns and hamlets of rural America. And do you know what they will be bringing with them? Their entire families. Families without garages full of cars, families that will be on foot walking the once quiet streets. Kids playing noisily on the streets, not picking corn, greasing pigs, or bailing hay.
Yes, now I see how foolish I was not to believe the Republicans when they spoke of the caravans coming into the country. My mistake was thinking the caravans would be coming into the Country and not into the country. Mea culpa. Welcome to the country you beautiful travelers.

The governor and members of both legislative bodies are all up for reelection in 2026. It's going to be a heavy lift for a NYC mayor to find support for increasing income taxes in the 2026 session.

when it comes to property taxes. New York City's labyrinthine property tax system is antiquated, inequitable, and overdue for reform. I'm sure that Mamdani and his team know that it's a great place to start.

And do you know who it would hit hard in the pocketbook? Donald Trump.

It really is time to explore breaking up the USA. I know this is Putin's goal. To destroy America from within. But Blue states pay for the Red States ( with a few exceptions ). It really is time we keep our tax dollars at home to pay for our infrastructure and our people, to prioritize what we believe in. I pay a huge amount in taxes... it is past time that my tax dollars went to something other than ICE CBP and the War Department.

who refuse to raise tax revenues in their own states that have their hands out for Federal dollars. Expose their own corruption as to why their residents have poor education, infrastructure, Health care access, state services as compared to states with higher taxes, etc.

States like California, Minnesota, New York, Colorado, New Jersey, etc., show where the tax dollars go and have far healthier economies. They are higher tax states, but the quality of life is far better than in states like Kentucky, West Virginia, the Carolinas, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, etc.

I have had the opportunity to travel all over this country and have seen first hand how states compare. I will be adding the Carolinas to that list this coming weekend as I am set to visit friends in SE Georgia and travel up to the North Carolina Renaissance Festival for a weekend of revelry. Just in my little corner of Minnesota, I can see that the quality of life here is far better than any "red" state by leaps and bounds.

They started this communism when Bernie entered the picture in 2015. It worked for them then, and sure as hell they are going to try it again. It's all bullshit, and they know it. However, this time around, it appears the people have finally figured it out that Mamdani's policies are the farthest thing from communism.

Fascism is now in full display, and the GOP thinks that is the acceptable way of life. 10s of millions of people are completely against fascism. I am one of them. I personally don't see any problem with more socialism than we already have. I fully support free education(we use to have that) and healthcare for all, just to name a few. I honestly thought "We the people" actually meant "We the people". NOT "We the dictatorship".

Yeah, I know that's nothing new. But the job of the President is to administer the programs appropriated and approved by Congress, not to arbitrarily withhold funds based on his personal whims.

And it also looks like the entire Republican Party does not understand their Congressional roles and responsibilities.

Vote them all out. Every single one. Enough of the rampant ignorance infesting our politics.

Maybe the State of New York could just find a legal way to withhold funds from the Fed until it resumed equitable distribution to the main population center in the State of New York.

What matters is whether or not the mayor of NYC does a good job helping the people who call the place home. Mamdani is no communist anyway. Are Republicans that much at a loss for tired slogans? In practice, anyone in any kind of executive position is going to end up making the term "Democratic Socialist" about as meaningful as "military intelligence." It's the kind of job the mayor does that matters, and not what label he plasters to the front of his suit or the bumper of his car.

If the President can unilaterally cut NYC funding because they don't vote as he wants, what does that do to ALL ELECTIONS. Will he cut any state's funding that votes for a Democrat for Governor or Senate?

As to NYC, he already has cut important programs like the expansion of the Tunnel system from NJ that has been needed for decades.

Trump needs to consider that the US economy was the envy of the world - and that was not because of states like Mississippi and Alabama! Destroying NYC's economy will negatively impact NY, NJ, and CT. Doing the same to VA, MD MA, CA, WA, and OR as well results in a poor economy nationwide.

Trump forgets that CA is teh fourth largest economy in the world (and the USA is one of those above it), and combined NY and CA could stop Trump and collapse red sates, if they chose to stop funding Trump's illegal activities. And there is the loophole that would allow them to do it..
