Statue of Confederate general toppled by protestors in 2020 is returned to its DC perch after Trump's order

The statue of a Confederate general that was toppled by demonstrators protesting the murder of George Floyd in 2020 has been reinstated in Washington, D.C., under orders from President Donald Trump. After sitting in storage for over five years, the statue of Albert Pike, a brigadier general and revered figure among Freemasons, returned to Judiciary Square, just a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol, on Saturday, WTOP News reported.

The bronze statue of Pike was the sole outdoor statue of a Confederate military leader in the nation’s capital. It had been yanked to the ground with ropes and chains and set on fire on Juneteenth 2020, as nationwide protests erupted following the death of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man killed in Minneapolis when a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck.

Confederate statues around the country were toppled during similar protests, while several military bases named for Confederate leaders were given new names.

The statue’s reinstallation “aligns with federal responsibilities under historic preservation law as well as recent executive orders to beautify the nation’s capital and reinstate pre-existing statues,” the National Park Service said in August announcing the the return.

When the Confederate army went north of the Mason-Dixon, like to Pennsylvania, they engaged in slave hunts.

There is nothing about the Confederacy or its leaders or its soldiers that was noble.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released a statement after learning that the National Park Service (NPS) returned the statue of Confederate General Albert Pike to its place near Judiciary Square over the weekend. It had been in storage for five years after being pulled down by protesters in 2020.

"Over the weekend, the Trump Administration followed through on its decision to restore and reinstall the Albert Pike statue to its place near Judiciary Square. The morally objectionable move is an affront to the mostly Black and Brown residents of the District of Columbia and offensive to members of the military who serve honorably,” Norton said. “Pike himself served dishonorably. He took up arms against the United States, misappropriated funds, and was ultimately captured and imprisoned by his own troops. He resigned in disgrace after committing a war crime and dishonoring even his own Confederate military service. Confederate statues should be placed in museums as historical artifacts, not remain in parks or other locations that imply honor. Pike represents the worst of the Confederacy and has no claim to be memorialized in the Nation’s capital.”

Norton introduced a bill in August to permanently remove the statue and authorize the Secretary of the Interior to donate it to a museum or a similar entity. Norton’s bill was passed by the House Committee on Natural Resources in the 116th Congress.
