Supreme Court rejects appeal from Ghislaine Maxwell, imprisoned former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein
Source: AP News
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from Ghislaine Maxwell, the imprisoned former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein.
On the first day of their new term, the justices declined to take up a case that would have drawn renewed attention to the sordid sexual-abuse saga after President Donald Trumps administration sought to tamp down criticism over its refusal to publicly release more investigative files from Epsteins case.
Lawyers for Maxwell, a British socialite, argued that she never should have been tried or convicted for her role in luring teenage girls to be sexually abused by Epstein, a New York financier. She is serving a 20-year prison term, though she was moved from a low-security federal prison in Florida to a minimum-security prison camp in Texas after she was interviewed in July by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Maxwells lawyers contended that a non-prosecution agreement reached in 2007 by federal prosecutors in Miami and Epsteins lawyers also protected his potential co-conspirators from federal charges anywhere in the country.

Maxwell was convicted for her role in recruiting and grooming girls who were sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein.

The decision means that Maxwells conviction on three counts and her 20-year criminal sentence remain in place.
Maxwells lawyer David Oscar Markus argued in court papers that an agreement Epstein made with prosecutors in Florida, in which the then-U.S. attorney pledged not to prosecute him or potential co-conspirators, should apply to one of the three counts in her case, which was prosecuted in New York.
"Were, of course, deeply disappointed that the Supreme Court declined to hear Ghislaine Maxwells case," Markus said in a statement. "But this fight isnt over. Serious legal and factual issues remain, and we will continue to pursue every avenue available to ensure that justice is done," he added.
At issue in Maxwells appeal was whether the terms of a so-called nonprosecution agreement apply only in the district where it was negotiated or also bind federal prosecutors nationwide.

I am suprised at this decision by the Supremes.

Nope not gonna happen. But Chump can give her a special "pardon for old-times' sake" deal as long as her compliance is assured. You know ... no books, no interviews, just get out of the country as quickly and quietly as possible.

FWIW, as Ms. Toad and I explained, there was nothing particularly notable about the Court scheduling Maxwell's petition for consideration at its September 29 conference -- indeed, today's order disposed of over 800 petitions for certiorari without any comment or dissent from any of the justices apart from a handful of notations that a particular justice didn't participate in the consideration of a particular petition.
Another interesting note --- among the petitions that the Court denied was one filed by Laura Loomer against Mark Zuckerberg.

The convicted sex trafficker invoked Jeffrey Epsteins infamous non-prosecution agreement that barred prosecuting his co-conspirators.
Supreme Court wonât review Ghislaine Maxwellâs appeal, which cited Epstein agreement www.msnbc.com/deadline-whi...

The federal Bureau of Prisons lists Maxwells release date as July 17, 2037. The 63-year-old was moved to a minimum-security facility after she had an unusual meeting this summer with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche (a former Trump personal lawyer), during which she said she never saw Trump do anything inappropriate. Her conviction followed Epsteins 2019 death in custody while he was being held on his own related charges.
Mondays denial comes amid political fallout from the Trump administrations attempts to fend off intense backlash to its refusal to release all the information it has on the late disgraced financier.
The legal argument in Maxwells petition centered on Epsteins notorious non-prosecution agreement in Florida that said, in part, that the United States also agrees that it will not institute any criminal charges against any potential co-conspirators of Epstein. She argued that the agreement should have applied to her New York case. The Trump Justice Department opposed high court review, arguing, among other things, that the agreement wasnt intended to bind districts outside of Florida.
Maxwell had urged the justices to take her case not only to resolve her appeal but also to settle a split among the nations courts about how to interpret such agreements. The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers backed her appeal, asking the justices to grant review and resolve the split among the circuits and ensure that defendants and their counsel can rely on the promises made by the United States in its written agreements.

If she were to have her case overturned by SCROTUS, which taco and company were hoping for, the Epstein files would surely go away
Read in another post here that taco urged SCROTUS to not hear the case that he fears her talking if shes free. I suppose. But I dont see this as a win for him
certainly not a legal expert

(36,927 posts)Proof that Trump really doesnt give a s**t about Maxwell, he is only using her as a surrogate case to secure his own so-called non-prosecution based on the theory that there was some sort of blanket immunity in Epsteins long s**tcanned sweetheart deal. Although, I dont think Trump is smart enough to push this on his own. He does have the position to, however.
It also could explain why he doesnt want to pardon her as that could be seen as an admission of guilt requiring anyone else charged in connection with Epsteins crimes to also be pardoned on a case by case basis leaving Trump the last pedo standing. There wouldnt be anyone left to pardon him.

Isn't it funny how that works? Why aren't we laughing?

(36,927 posts)I have no idea why this cockeyed administration does anything it does. Who exactly in the administration opposes the petition? They all speak with forked tongues, anyway. I dont know, maybe they are trying to obscure their real desires or thats what Trumps gut said on some Thursday after a bad hamberder.
Its all mis and disinformation.

Its fine that you keep asking me things. It means that youre paying attention to the situation.
What I am not fine with is that I fail to see the existence of any coherent Trump administration.
Everything points to an out of touch and mentally failing man child who has been installed as POTUS. Who only wants a Nobel Prize, to win the 2020 election, the Epstein case to disappear, and build a ludicrous throne room on the grounds of what was once the seat of the Executive Branch.
The rest of it is incompetent unfunny clowns doing whatever the f**k they want to try to keep in his demented graces and inflict as much pain on those they and he dont like and want gone by any means necessary. Also, to keep the lumbering horror lurching along and the gravy train on their side of the tracks.
