Source: NBC 5 Chicago
A Chicago alderperson said she ended up in handcuffs for a short time on Friday when she arrived at a hospital, hoping to speak with a man who had been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Ald. Jessie Fuentes, of the city's 26th Ward, said she received a call about a man who was detained and brought to a hospital by ICE for an injury to his leg. Fuentes said agents were trying to detain the man when he took off.
The alderwoman came to the hospital, hoping to speak to him, but also ended up in handcuffs. Fuentes said she was eventually released. Fuentes was joined by hospital officials and local leaders as they addressed ramped-up enforcement action, saying they will not back down and protect their community.
"Our rapid responders who are responding to ice sightings all over the Northwest Side showed up today," the alderwoman said, in part. "What ICE and federal agents are doing in the city of Chicago is violence, and we must respond."
