Source: NYT
Several journalists resigned this week from three newspapers in Alaska after the publications corporate owner made significant edits to an article about Charlie Kirks death, appearing to yield to pressure from a Republican state lawmaker who had criticized the coverage.

Its description in the second paragraph of Mr. Kirk whom the article called a Christian-Nationalist icon and defender of often racist and controversial views had struck a nerve with one of the vigils co-organizers.

In the revised version, the second paragraph appeared about 12 paragraphs into the article stating that Mr. Kirks views have been tied by many to a rise in Christian nationalism across the U.S. In describing Mr. Kirks frequent visits to college campuses, the article said that he had regularly defended his criticism of the Civil Rights Act and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as his opposition to gun control and affirmative action.
Gone from the article was a line stating that Mr. Kirk had perpetuated conspiracy theories, including Covid-19 and climate misinformation, as well as replacement theory, which posits that Jews are trying to replace white Americans with nonwhite immigrants.

(8,451 posts)similar material regarding Kirk's outspoken advocacy of conspiracy theories, including Covid-19 and climate misinformation, as well as replacement theory,, to say nothing of his support for a Christian Nationalist State in place of American constitutional democracy?

These are small newspapers. The Empire and Clarion publish Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the Empire has the highest daily circulation with just over 1,800 on Saturdays, as of 2023. (Circulation information for the Homer News was not readily available.)
Having been an editor at a very similar paper, I can attest that pay is low and working conditions leave much to be desired. I'd bet the house that these staffers didn't leave solely because of these corporate edits, but they were the fnal straw. (Writing for a paper that's edited at a corporate editing mill would be enough to chase me away by itself.)
