The announcements Sunday marked a significant shift in foreign policy, with several other European nations and U.S. allies set to follow suit in the coming days.

LONDON — The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia officially recognized Palestine as a state on Sunday, marking a significant shift in foreign policy and a step away from their alignment with the United States, with several other European nations and U.S. allies set to follow suit this week.

“Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognizes the State of Palestine,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement..........................

France is expected to formally declare its recognition of a Palestinian state on Monday at a United Nations conference in New York co-chaired with Saudi Arabia, coinciding with the start of the U.N. General Assembly.

French President Emmanuel Macron told Israeli television Channel 12 on Saturday that nations “have to recognize the legitimate right of Palestinian people to have a state.”............................

1. Is that going to stop the genocide?

Ha. Israel is doubling down. No one, including these fine Western nations, is stopping it. Where are the "consequences" threatened months ago?

But the starving and genocided of Gaza are grateful for the symbolic gesture I'm sure.

2. Acknowledging a state is the right thing to do, but it will not stop Israel's genocide.

These leaders need to put some teeth behind their actions by levying the strongest possible economic sanctions on Israel and refusing all trade with them. Israel has suffered no consequences for murdering Palestinians and destroying their homeland.

3. Exactly. Why is that not happening, I wonder?

Money, self-interest, fear and gaslighting have doomed Palestinians. Some call that complicity.

Since it is paying for and promoting the genocide. It also vetoes resolutions of the UN Security Council.

7. I was wondering if you thought Hamas had any culpability at all.

At least it was #4.
Conveniently, Israel has dealt with most of #4 on their own.

Curious about a #5: What about the United States ongoing funding of #1-3? Any crimes there for your wishlist, or is this where we blame it all on the Israelis?

8. As long as the US supports Israel's total impunity, only #4 will happen.

And Israel will continue to murder more mountains of Palestinians while the rest wring their hands and make symbolic gestures. They are afraid of the US, for good reasons.

People need to understand that the US has been complicit and never an honest broker for peace. With the exception of Jimmy Carter, a good and honest man and the only one who fully understood the impossible plight of the powerless Palestinians. Look what was done to him.

The entire power structure dominated by Israel's influence on foreign policy would need to be dismantled. It didn't happen under the Democrats, it certainly won't happen now. The writing was on the wall about the fate of Palestinians during the entire Biden Presidency, which saw a genocide unfolding. Those who saw the writing, have been screaming about it for nearly two years to no avail.

17 Democratic Senators voted to continue arming Israel recently. They don't represent the democratic base who want an arms embargo. Let's start there.

12. Israel has squandered the international good will that followed 10/7 the same way we squandered...

...the international unity that supported us in the aftermath of 9/11.

We both used an horrific attack to justify a wildly disproportionate response. The 9/11 and 10/7 attacks found success, not because of what the perpetrators did, but because of what the victimized did in response. Bush/Cheney and Netanyahu did more damage to their countries than Al Qaeda or Hamas ever did.

Over two-thirds of French citizens and almost 90% of the British public don’t support their governments’ expected moves this week to recognize a Palestinian state without preconditions, such as Hamas’s release of hostages and surrender, being met, according to two separate polls by the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF) and JL Partners.

15. News reports about Gaza don't immediately make me think of Hamas or Netanyahu

I instantly think about all those precious children….wounded, maimed, starving, sick, terrified, traumatized, exhausted, displaced, disoriented. All while the world watches.
It’s way beyond shameful.

One thing news reports unfortunately do is underscore how some humans have a lot more value than other humans and how some humans are willing to overlook ANYTHING if it brings about a “win” for their side.
