President Donald Trump has been quietly pushing his national security officials for months to find a way to get Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan back from the Taliban, three people familiar with the matter told CNN. Trump hinted at those discussions publicly for the first time on Thursday, telling reporters that his administration is working to regain control of the base, which lies an hour north of Kabul.
The Taliban took it over following the collapse of the Afghan government and the US military withdrawal in 2021. We gave it to (the Taliban) for nothing, Trump said during a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer on Thursday. Were trying to get it back, by the way.
The sources told CNN that the conversations about returning the base to US control date back at least to March. Trump and his senior national security officials believe the base is needed for several reasons, including to surveil China, whose border is under 500 miles away; gain access to rare earth elements and mining in Afghanistan; establish a counterterrorism node to target ISIS; and possibly reopen a diplomatic facility, the sources said.
But all of those objectives would require a US military presence, one of the sources said. And a deal that Trump stuck with the Taliban in 2020, during his first term, mandated a full withdrawal of US troops from the country.

(29,872 posts)He's an engineer and can't get regular work. As you can imagine the Taliban is making things exceptionally bad for anyone not in their gang.
He shared most people are living hand to mouth. He wants to get out but doing so is not only next to impossible without money (which apparently belongs only to the Taliban) it's dangerous.
He's the sweetest guy. My heart breaks.

(29,872 posts)I just sent the whole thing to him. I've been trying to connect him with other Afghan friends who are professionals who were able to leave.
I feel absolutely terrible for the women, too. Most are no longer able to get maternity care. Lots of newborns are dying. The women are forced to give birth at home alone with no assistance. No doctor, midwife or pain management. Risks to mothers are exponentially worse.

(77,928 posts)This was over 15 years ago. The 200 million was just a drop in the pocket regarding how much money was spent for this spot in Afgan that Trump gave away to the Taliban!!
Now Trump wants it back--WITH MORE TAX MONEY!!

Bagram Airfield keeps growing
More than $200 million in projects in the works
By CHUCK CRUMBO - ccrumbo@thestate.com
BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan -- Seven days a week, concrete trucks rumble along the dusty perimeter road of this air base as bulldozers and backhoes reshape the rocky earth.
Hundreds of laborers slap mortar onto bricks as they build barracks and offices. Four concrete plants on the base have operated around the clock for 18 months to keep up with the construction needs.
Official U.S. policy is not to create a permanent occupation force in Afghanistan. But it is clear from what's happening at Bagram Airfield - the Afghan end of the Charleston-to-Afghanistan lifeline - that the U.S. military won't be packing up soon.

(170,178 posts)The president says he wants to reclaim a former U.S. base in Afghanistan. The Taliban apparently has different ideas.
As Trump talks about reclaiming a former U.S. base in Afghanistan, spare a thought for the voters who convinced themselves that Trump was the candidate of foreign policy restraint and isolationism.

Years later, Trump is back in the White House, and hes still talking about going back into Afghanistan. NBC News reported:
Trump said that the U.S. was trying to get back Bagram Airbase, a former U.S. military base in Afghanistan. He did not provide details or what it would mean for U.S. troops, who left Afghanistan in 2021 during a widely criticized withdrawal.
Speaking to reporters at an event in England, Trump said of Bagram, Were trying to get it back, by the way. OK, that could be a little breaking news. Were trying to get it back, because they need things from us. We want that base back.
He didnt appear to be kidding.
Trump: Bagram, one of the biggest air bases, we gave to them for nothing. We are trying to get it back, that could be breaking news. They need things from us.

The Taliban, for what its worth, made clear soon after that its not willing to return the base to American control, and its difficult to imagine the White House changing Taliban leaders minds.
.....Five years later, however, Trump has launched deadly military strikes on civilian boats in international waters. And launched preemptive military strikes on targets in Iran. And initiated a bombing campaign in Yemen. And announced his desire to annex Canada, Greenland, the Panama Canal and the Gaza Strip. And directed the Pentagon to target drug cartels in Mexico.
And is now once again focusing on Afghanistan.
If you voted for Trump because you expected restraint on foreign policy and the use of military force abroad, I have some awful news for you.
