US vetoes UN demand for ceasefire, aid access in Gaza

US says Hamas is responsible for starting and continuing war

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 18 (Reuters) - The United States vetoed on Thursday a draft United Nations Security Council resolution that would have demanded an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and that Israel lift all restrictions on aid deliveries to the Palestinian enclave.

The text, drafted by the elected 10 members of the 15-member council, would also have demanded the immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups.

It received 14 votes in favor. It was the sixth time the U.S. had cast a veto in the Security Council over the nearly two-year war between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas.

"Famine has been confirmed in Gaza - not projected, not declared, confirmed," Denmark's U.N. Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen told the council before the vote.

"Meanwhile, Israel has expanded its military operation in Gaza City, further deepening the suffering of civilians. As a result, it is this catastrophic situation, this humanitarian and human failure, that has compelled us to act today."

and were on board with it. Just like here. Just like now. The US long ago should have been held to account for many of our atrocities of the last 300+ years. Some of them ongoing. Likely more to come. I always rejected the BS about our "exceptionalism" and the crap Raygun started with his "shining city on a hill" nonsense.

Well, almost. The US has vetoed it every time. Even in the general assembly, it always gets passed. But only the security council can enforce a resolution.

The main one being is a 3/4th vote of the UN body can override the security council if they veto something.

The situation is more complex than blaming what should have been a Democratic POTUS win on anti-war protesters.

Reminds me of Vietnam era only much worse.

POTUS Biden supported a ceasefire and a two-state solution and was kneecapped by party insiders and large donors.

Most of us got behind Harris and Walz with renewed excitement.

Netanyahu got who he and Greater Israel extremists wanted for POTUS with the election of Trump. AIPAC and more extreme supporters of Netanyahu and Likud gave lots of money to both sides in the election.

Israel got the benefit of the doubt after October 7, 2023.

"High-minded moralists" supported Israel's response. Most of us supported Israel because that is all we have ever known. Some of us are repulsed by violence. Too many still support the "war".

Israel has lost the benefit of the doubt to most of the world and a majority of Democrats and young Americans.

Israel is damn transparent now at great harm and ominous risk to the USA and World with no end in sight.
