Education Department to oversee initiative promoting 'patriotism' and 'civic knowledge'

Source: USA Today

Sept. 18, 2025, 1:02 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON - The Department of Education is bringing in over 40 conservative groups to launch a civic education initiative it says will renew patriotism and increase knowledge of the nation's founding principles. The department did not specify exactly what initiatives the groups would undertake but said the “America 250 Civics Education Coalition,” will be spearheaded by the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank founded by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.

The involved groups include the 1776 Project Foundation, whose affiliated PAC ran a nationwide campaign to oust school board members they alleged were in favor of racial and social justice lessons. It also includes Moms for Liberty, a Florida-based group that has targeted school board members, advocated for book bans and does not have to disclose its donors.

Others include Turning Point USA, the college advocacy group founded by the late Charlie Kirk; the Heritage Foundation, a right-leaning think tank and the lead sponsor of Project 2025; Hillsdale College, a conservative Christian school in Michigan, and the Faith and Freedom Coalition, a free market group with roots in the Tea Party movement that also opposes abortion and same-sex marriage.

They plan to visit K-12 schools in all 50 states, hold a competition between students on American history and launch a college speaker series that'll focus on America's "core rights and values."

Rightwing loon indoctrination. The schools should lock the doors, refuse entry, and have them charged with trespassing.

Oh the hypocrisy, let thee count thee ways…

1) the right wing that hates college and calls it a scam has several college influenced members of this civics project.
2) the reason we don’t teach much civics anymore is because conservatives in the 80s forced the push to take it out of public education led by Bill Bennett. Now they’re rueing that boneheaded decision and want to put it back in. (Typical arsonist always think they’re the ones to save the building that they sat on fire).
3) they want to teach civics and history, but are bringing in only conservative mindset. I bet each of these groups would probably flunk a sixth grade history exam nor could pass the citizenship test. And yet they want to create curriculum?
4) modern Republican Party realizes that educated people don’t vote for them and don’t buy their gaslighting. Those that develop critical thinking skills are not their friend. It’s not a good look for them to be the party of dumb assery, so they’re going to push “alternative facts” filled education and manipulate the masses to form their own version of Idiocracy. That will not give them the long term outcome they think it will. (See #2)

We have a thing they didn’t have in the 80s when they were successfully killing Civics education, “the Internets”.

...but they want it to be right-wing civic knowledge, like the stuff Trump "knows"

As for patriotism, we don't need any lessons from the traitor-in-chief.
