NYT chief executive warns Trump is deploying 'anti-press playbook', FT says

Sept 17 (Reuters) - The chief executive officer of the New York Times (NYT.N), Meredith Kopit Levien, said the company would "not be cowed" by U.S. President Donald Trump’s $15-billion lawsuit against the newspaper, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

The suit is the latest in Trump's flurry of legal attacks on media during his second term, including a $10-billion defamation case against the Wall Street Journal in July.

The lawsuit was legally baseless, Levien told a Financial Times conference in remarks the paper called her first public utterance on the matter. "The lawsuit has no merit. It lacks any legitimate legal claims. I believe its purpose is to stifle independent journalism, to deter the kind of fact-based reporting that the Times and other institutions are known for."

She added, "There is an anti-press playbook at this point  . . . The New York Times will not be cowed by this." The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

... in other words the press is freer in Ghana (what the orange man would call a $#!+ hole country) than in the USA. And the USA has a constitutional right to "free speech".

The NYT has worked overtime the last decade to establish our police state.

This is performative hand-wringing.

Ultimately, the billionaire owner's of the NYT will settle to save money. Money is all they understand, want, or think they need.

Nixon must be very annoyed in Hell for having been born 50 years too early.

I could say because he's a whiny little bitch. But it's really a frivolous suit that he'll eventuallydrop; he just wants to create distracting headlines to turn attention away from his Epstein rape/trafficking connection.

As for this...

Ultimately, the billionaire owner's of the NYT will settle to save money. Money is all they understand, want, or think they need.

How do you know this? The NYT's history is winning landmark free speech cases. You need to do more reading.

It's one thing to post "imo's" over events. It's quite another to post uninformed opinions.
Free speech should be used responsibly or we're no more committed to facts and history than our opponents.

used to be at the forefront of investigating the government. That was then, this is now. Sullivan was in 1969. They NYT has spent much of the last decade undermining the First Amendment by going after the Dems and ignoring the crazies.

My opinion is informed by how quickly our Democracy, our "leaders", and our institutions, folded against Trump. It is informed by the fact that 34% of the electorate CHOSE fascism with their eyes open. My opinions is informed by all of the "experts" who assured me the various firewalls against autocracy would hold, then I watched them cave with barely a whimper. My opinion is informed by the fact that we now have so many billionaires calling the shots that there is a waiting list to get on the Forbes 400 (500 strong, last I checked).

What's your timeline that informs you for "how quickly our Democracy, our "leaders", and our institutions, folded against Trump"? I ask because memory and history should matter.

starting with the bought and paid for Thomas Court ruling that Trump was immune from criminal prosecution.

Would you like a timeline? Would the timeline actually matter to you?

isn't accurate or fair, either, because the Dems, while governing competently, might have been aware of a Charles Koch's funding through Heritage and the Federalist Society to swing the SCOTUS, but it wasn't until the last two congressional sessions that Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse followed the money and established the evidence that it was he who bought the maga SCOTUS, and how.
Then the party finally saw Project 2025's goals and learned of Heritage's larger stealth operation, funded by Koch, for the last 25 years. It's not Democrats' fault that while they were governing, plans to privatize the US economy had been in the works; nor could they have exerted oversight of the private business owner, Charles Koch, or the founders of Heritage.

That timeline of the stealth defunding & undermining of democracy is important, yes. And of course it should matter to everyone, not just me.

Your claims are baseless, because in fact, as you eventually realize, none of this has been done quickly. Nor did the left or Democrats "fold."
