USDA considering economic aid for farmers this fall, says secretary

Source: Reuters

September 15, 2025 12:55 PM EDT Updated 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON, Sept 15 (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture is working with Congress to evaluate whether economic aid might be needed for the nation's farmers this autumn amid trade disputes and record-high yields, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said on Monday.

U.S. farmers have missed out on billions in soybean sales to China as stalled trade talks halt exports, and the USDA's recent forecast of a record corn crop this autumn will likely weigh on a farm economy already saddled with low prices and rising fertilizer and seed costs.

Rollins pointed to inflation, high yields and the stalled talks with China as reasons for a year of projected losses for farmers.

"We are working with our colleagues in Congress and closely monitoring markets daily to evaluate the amount of additional assistance that might be needed this fall," Rollins said at a conference of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture in Rogers, Arkansas.

But if anyone saw a video someone posted here in DU, the farmers voted for him for that exact same reason, they wanted more free money, and tax cuts. According to the woman on the video, most farmers are millionaires, and I would dare to say that it is, in part, thanks to our tax dollars.

How did I miss out on that? Like any occupation, their are billionaire fat cats looking to invest their dead relatives money and middle class people working to make a living.

The margins are very small for traditional farmers.

The billionaire farmers are in corn, wheat, soybean and rice mostly in the midwest. There are some farmers who raise pigs for the Chinese markets. They are more likely to be raising pigs for a corporation that makes most all the profit. The same for chicken in the US. If you raise chickens for Tyson forget about getting much profit. Beef is popular around here and raising cattle is another frequently corporatized farming system. But the farmers raising cattle, or other farm products to sell at auctions are definitely not millionaires.

These grain producers grow it mostly for export. Their markets are mostly outside the country. These are the farmers pedo Trump bails out. He may also bail out Tyson chicken and the Chinese pig farmers but that's to support the corporation. It doesn't go to individual farmers.

I'm a small farmer. I do a little of everything. I grow fruits, vegetables, eggs and meat. I have even grown saffron and other expensive herbs to get my sales up. I sell directly to Americans, no exporting. I don't do massive amounts of grains or livestock. And I have never gotten a bailout from uncle Sam. In fact, he keeps raising my tax bill. Just as I think I will have a good season, in comes pedo Trump to raise my taxes and cut a huge chunk of my profits.

These are the great believers in Saint Milton Friedman?

Good God. The Democrats, are, of course, then encouraged to occupy the Chicago School space abandoned by the MAGAs. They should decline, and move hard left instead. If the market has failed to produce fair trade, then it has failed. Say the MAGA premise is correct, but its solution is insane and incoherent. That's the play, not slotting oneself into the Friedmanite spot to be further abused.

The people know neoliberalism is a failure. That's why they vote for Trump in the first place. You have to give them the viable alternative, not take up the anti-Trump position from inside the neoliberal catastrophe.

Some people do not learn from this past.

I have seen this play during Trump's first term.

He imposes tariffs; markets are closed to farmer's products; they need bailing out.

Why did Trump think it would be different the second time?
