Trump Attacks Hochul Over New York Mamdani Endorsement

President Donald Trump slammed New York Governor Kathy Hochul after she publicly endorsed democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City, calling the move "a very bad one for New York City" and suggesting that federal funding to the city could be in jeopardy.

In a Truth Social post early Monday, the president wrote: "Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has Endorsed the 'Liddle' Communist,' Zohran Mamdani, running for Mayor of New York. This is a rather shocking development, and a very bad one for New York City. How can such a thing happen? Washington will be watching this situation very closely. No reason to be sending good money after bad! President DJT." The remark appeared to be a subtle threat echoing previous statements Trump has made about funding to New York should Mamdani win.

Hochul's endorsement comes less than two months before the general election, giving a significant boost to Mamdani, a 33-year-old progressive New York State assemblyman who has surged ahead in the polls with support from left-leaning voters. Trump's attack signals his intent to inject federal influence into the race and potentially leverage fiscal policy to punish political decisions he opposes.

Mamdani's lead has grown even as high-profile national Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have held back endorsements.

According to Opensecrets.org

Doesn't matter that New Yorkers overwhelmingly back Mamdani to address the Israeli-Gaza "conflict" (at this point clearly a sad euphemism).

Schumer said the quiet part out loud when he said "My job is to keep the left pro-Israel." And, as Jefferies stated, " Our commitment to Israel's security is ironclad."

The recent New York Times/Siena College survey asked likely New York City voters, regardless of which candidate they support, "which of the following mayoral candidates do you think has best addressed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during the campaign."

Mamdani led the field with 43%, followed by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo at 16%, Mayor Eric Adams at 11%, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa at 8%.

The poll also showed that 46% of likely voters sympathized with Palestinians compared to 29% with Israel.

Despite this, Schumer and Jefferies know which side their bread has been buttered, and clearly wouldn't mind a little bit more butter. Hochul, no stranger to trips to Israeli settlements to shhow support, has read the writing on the wall. Hopefully, our Democratic leadership will do the same.
