The House Republican risking GOP backlash to save Obamacare subsidies

Source: Politico

Among all the troublemaking members House Republican leaders have to deal with, Rep. Jen Kiggans isn’t on their list of problem children. That might be changing.

A former Navy helicopter pilot, nurse practitioner and mother of four, the 54-year-old Virginian is seen in the Republican Conference as something of a model member, hailing from one of the toughest swing districts in the country. She is viewed by her peers as personable and a team player. Of all the places Mike Johnson might have gone on the eve of the 2024 elections, the speaker chose to spend time with Kiggans — a strong show of leadership support for a freshman.

But Kiggans, now in her second term, has decided to stick her neck out on what’s shaping up to be one of the most politically explosive policy fights of the fall: the battle over extending boosted Affordable Care Act insurance subsidies that are due to expire on Dec. 31. Congressional budget forecasters are predicting major premium hikes if the subsidies sunset, which would force millions of people to drop health insurance coverage.

Twelve Republicans and seven Democrats are backing legislation that would enact a one-year extension of the subsidies, which are implemented in the form of enhanced tax credits. Kiggans is the lead sponsor and the GOP face of the effort.

They are fighting to keep the Obamacare subsidies, fucking think about that.

The Medicaid and Medicare cuts will happen a bit later. Social Security cuts are being done covertly.

Think about this for one fucking moment; Back in March Democrats could have voted against the CR (the vast majority of them did) and fought to not fund the government until all of our social safety net was protected.

Think about this, everyone who lamented that Democrats would have been blamed for a shutdown I say, the vast majority of the American people would have been behind us, including many Magats, just look what is happening now with Obamacare subsidies.

Now, the law is signed sealed and delivered that guts our social safety net. much harder to repeal what is done.

The push that Senator Schumer did back in March, to give Krasnov all that he wanted and get nothing in return was the worst decision I have seen in my 78 years on this planet, a handful of Senate Democrats went against the will of the vast majority of Senate and House Democrats.

We have no war time consiglieris in our party.

We have no strategic plan, we have no medium term vision let alone a long-term vision.

Democrat leadership is stuck in some strange place somewhere around 2005. We need to clean house and get real fighters in there or it’s just gonna continue to be the slow grind of our country our party in our democracy.

So rather than let this GOP congresswoman twist in the wind, Dems are going to save her, extend the subsidies for one year -which no one aside from a limited few will notice or give credit to Dems - and then Republicans will finished burning down and sabotaging everything else.

Another great plan, Dems. :/
