South Korea probes for human rights abuses in U.S. raid as Trump insists foreign workers 'welcome'

Source: NBC News

Sept. 15, 2025, 6:31 AM EDT

HONG KONG – South Korea said Monday that it would investigate whether its workers suffered any human rights violations during a raid by U.S. authorities, as President Donald Trump insisted that he did not want to "frighten off" foreign investment.

Foreign workers are "welcome" in America, Trump said on social media Sunday, after the emotional return of more than 300 workers to South Korea. But their detention following a raid by immigration authorities at a Hyundai plant in Georgia has stunned the key U.S. ally.

“I understand that the government is conducting a more thorough review with the companies to determine whether any human rights violations occurred,” presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a press briefing Monday, according to the Yonhap News Agency.

“The foreign ministry is looking at whether our demands were properly addressed, and the companies are also conducting their own reviews, to check whether any measures were insufficient on either the Korean side or U.S. side,” Kang said.

They should take their ball and go home and make the state of GA confront the guy they chose to vote for in 2024. Like China, they "own the means of production" (not just their own cars but many of the electronics we use) and that was mostly due to the U.S.'s own greedy corporate overlords who off-shored for "cheap labor" to pad their bottom line.

Plus it should be a campaign highlight of Jon Ossoff who is up for reelection in 2026.

I get that this was a big show raid for numbers and because it’s for batteries as part of a “green” industry. It seems to me that LG and Hyundai didn’t do their homework unless there was some sort of agreement that the Trump admin ignored or just threw away.

These projects were planned years ago and any "normal" person would not assume that this country would not only elect an abject racist to be President (again), but that this loon white supremacist at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue would go about turning over every table and digging under every sofa cushion to remove non-white people.

From the Georgia Department of Economic Development's website -

Hyundai Motor Group to Invest $5.54 Billion in Georgia at First Fully Dedicated Electric Vehicle and Battery Manufacturing Facility

Bryan County, GA – May 20, 2022 – At a signing ceremony today, Governor Brian P. Kemp and Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung announced that Hyundai Motor Group will open its first fully dedicated electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing facility in the State of Georgia. Hyundai Motor Group (HMG, or "the Group" ) will invest $5.54 billion in opening a state-of-the-art U.S. smart factory at the Bryan County Megasite. Non-affiliated Hyundai Motor Group suppliers will invest approximately another $1 billion in the project, delivering approximately 8,100 new jobs to Georgia’s coastal region.

Governor Kemp was joined by Jay Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, and José Muñoz, President and COO of Hyundai Motor Company, along with Hyundai Motor Group executives and state and local economic development leaders at the premier 2,923-acre site. The megasite was purchased jointly by the Savannah Harbor-Interstate 16 Corridor Joint Development Authority (JDA) and the State less than a year ago.

“We are proud to welcome Hyundai Motor Group to Georgia as we forge an innovative future together," said Governor Brian Kemp. "From initial conversations on my economic development mission to Korea to Georgia’s investment in the Bryan County Megasite, we've been preparing for an opportunity like this for a long time. My commitment to hardworking Georgians to make our state the best place to live, work, and raise our families remains steadfast, and with this announcement, which is now the largest economic development project in our state's history, we will continue working to make Georgia the premier destination for quality companies who are creating the jobs of today, tomorrow, and beyond.”

This is the notable part -

and with this announcement, which is now the largest economic development project in our state's history

And 45 came in like a rabid Veruca Salt, and fucked it up.

This sort of thing is repeating itself across the nation in red states who hustled and cajoled these foreign companies to "invest" in their states. And now their dear leader is torpedoing it all.

You hold all the cards (as Trump likes to say). Don't follow the example set in the USA by law firms and universities and elected officials and our news media of giving in all the time. Stay tough.

Trump/MAGA seem to get off on targeting our best friends. Korean companies have a long history of investing in large scale high tech manufacturing in the USA. They've invested many billions in the USA and were in the process of investing billions more. Apparently this is how Trump/MAGA says thank you.
