As authorities at the federal and state levels parse the details of the fatal shooting of far-right activist Charlie Kirk at a university in Utah, a recently passed state bill that allows people with concealed-carry permits to carry firearms openly on college campuses has drawn fresh scrutiny.
Utah has allowed for permitless open and concealed carry of weapons since 2021. But before the passage of HB 128, firearms had to be concealed when carried on college campuses. The law allowed people with the proper permit to carry them openly.
When the law passed in August, university staff voiced concerns about what carrying could mean for classroom emergencies that might require students to act as armed responders and their presence in laboratories where harmful and potent chemicals were stored.
While its unclear whether the suspected shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was legally allowed to own the hunting rifle used in the shooting, or have one on a university campus, the proximity between the bills passing and the shooting has pushed the law into headlines across the US. The bill did not come in a vacuum, but added to Utahs already second amendment-friendly legislative landscape.

(24,347 posts)Robinson didn't carry the rifle openly; he kept it hidden on his way in and out of the campus. Maybe if having firearms on campus was outlawed, they'd have another minor charge to add to the murder charge. Given his escape path, I think they could add "jaywalking" if they wanted.

(58,924 posts)Since it appears to be open season for right wing crazies to be hunting right wing crazies, what could we possibly have against them continuing to eliminate each other in this fashion? Waiting for "the left" to do it is like waiting for Godot. We're the gun control crowd, remember? We're the "libbruls," the people who don't want this kind of thing to happen to anybody, even them.
So if anyone is going to go around acting like it's open season on right wing extremists, it ain't gonna be us. If the right wing crazies stop shooting at each other, there will be no one left to do it. THEN what will Fox Noise do? Report the news factually? Since that's something they have never done before, they'd have to start learning how from square one.

Got it.

(261 posts)Open carry had nothing to do with this. Also, he lived off campus - he didnt have an arsenal in his dorm room. Way to murk up waters and add to the discord. Opportunists are everywhere.
