Utah governor says alleged Kirk shooter not cooperating with authorities

Gov. Spencer Cox, R-Utah, said Sunday that the suspect in the shooting that killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk is not cooperating with authorities. "He has not confessed to, to authorities. He is, he is, he is not cooperating, but, but, but all the people around him are cooperating. And I think that's, that's, that's very important," Cox told ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz.
Authorities identified Kirk's alleged shooter as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who now remains in custody. Charges are expected to be formally filed on Tuesday, Cox said. Cox was also asked about a Sunday New York Times report that alleged Robinson had communicated with others on Discord after the shooting. The Times reported Robinson had made jokes about being the alleged gunman.
"All we can confirm is that those conversations definitely were happening, and they did not believe it was actually him. It was, it was all joking until, until he, you know, until he admitted that it actually was him," he said.
Authorities are reviewing a group chat between several people joking about how the shooter looked like Robinson, multiple law enforcement sources told ABC News.

(14,401 posts)Classmates (and teachers?) routinely describe Robinson as "quiet" and "noticeably 'smart" - and his academic achievement was (again) 'well above average'. Note, I did not label this person Mensa or genius level IQ. But, then - I don't think that necessary to qualify for my generalized 'well above .. '
But, more importantly - given what evidence we do have - I think I'll stick with my refutation of the, "Arrogant murderers probably don't have much of a brain" post that I responded to. In this case - that assertion would seem to be - well, frankly just flat out wrong! The kid was certainly no dummy. While, at the same time, performing horrible actions has little or nothing to do with 'having a brain'. And, taking both of those errors into account, the statement I objected veers far wider of the mark than my own poor statement.
Also - as you are doubtlessly aware - kids drop out of school for all kinds of reasons. And in fact - a lot of the time those reasons have nothing to do with academic 'ability'. And further - as you are also doubtlessly aware - it is an egregious mistake to attempt to tie 'coping', to anything like IQ or acuity. That's clearly false analogy.

(2,493 posts)Does his attorney want him to claim that he was some kind of victim in this? That someone bought him a hamburger and gave him $100 to go on the roof for a security check? That he put a spent cartridge in the rifle before going on the roof as a failsafe, as proof that he didn't fire a shot? That he was comfortable taking part in a republican orchestrated event?

(6,265 posts)I'm sorry, but what the fuck is this:
It has been standard practice in news reporting forever to remove repetitions and filler words when quoting people in news stories. You literally learn this in junior high school journalism class. Was this story written by an AI? This is terrible.

(160,069 posts)what was said and select SOME actually-spoken words to put into quotes. That way you remove the "stammering".
But if you are going to quote someone "in whole", and then stick that "in quotes", then you need to put ALL the words there (and/or include a term like "unintelligible" (in parenthesis), if a portion of the remarks could not be heard and/or understood and/or captured accurately due to some issue).
That is what happens when they do transcriptions.

(4,001 posts)off a very high cliff the last few years. But, in this particular case, I think that including the repetitive filler words elucidates the governor's style as a poor public speaker.
Prairie Gates
(6,265 posts)There are many analyses of how journalists used to include filler words for younger speakers and minority speakers in order to attack and deride them. But that shouldn't be the point of a story. This story is not about how Cox is a poor public speaker. It is about his claims relating to Robinson's cooperation. For that reason, deriding him through direct quotation of his repetitions is unprofessional.
Listen, I dislike the Governor of Utah as much as the next DUer, but this is horrible journalism. It's literally unacceptable in the middle school newspaper.
