Official Defies GOP Governor's Order To Fly Flags At Half Staff For Charlie Kirk

A local official in Iowa defied the governors orders to fly flags at half-staff in honor of Charlie Kirk, saying he did not want to honor a man who did so much to harm not only the marginalized, but also to degrade the fabric of our body politic.
Jon Green, chair of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, shared a screenshot on Facebook of a note he had sent to elected officials in the county, which includes Iowa City. In the note, he ordered flags to fly at half-staff on 9/11 in remembrance of those who died in the 2001 attacks, and asked that we keep all victims of gun violence, including the slain Colorado students, at front of mind as we serve.
The students he mentioned were shot at a Denver-area high school on Wednesday, the same day Kirk, founder of the conservative group Turning Point USA, was assassinated in Utah. While Green didnt explicitly mention Kirk in his note to staff, he did address Kirks death in his Facebook post.
I condemn Kirks killing, regardless of who pulled the trigger or why, he wrote on the social media platform. But I will not grant Johnson County honors to a man who made it his lifes mission to denigrate so many of the constituents I have sworn an oath to protect, and who did so much to harm not only the marginalized, but also to degrade the fabric of our body politic. Green, a Democrat, noted he would accept any consequence, whether legal or electoral, for my decision. It is mine alone.

(3,480 posts)one can accurately describe any game between Wisconsin and Michigan as "weasel vs weasel."
the badger is a flat weasel, and the wolverine is a really big weasel. (Seriously - they're both mustelids.)
But at least your mascot is the whole animal. Mine is just the eyeball.

all over our area here in Oregon.
For Charlie Kirk? Im very sorry for his family and others who cared about him. But all the flags in and around Portland at half staff - for HIM? He was a political operative who had some higher-profile credits. But his name and reputation hadnt had much of an impact on the general public. But gee whiz, flags at half-staff for him?
I guess hes no longer a political operative now. Hes a freakin STAR!

(9,043 posts)I do not know what they are for, because there are a few reasons for doing this right now.
I sincerely hope none of them are for him, but there are plenty of 'semi-closet' rethugs around here. Most are business owners of some kind, so it would be no surprise to find out this action was for him.
I really fear for this state. History is always about ebbs and flows, and the fact that this state is so completely blue tells me that it will not hold forever. That scares me.

(629 posts)For a long time I've thought people lower the flag too much. This is not helping.
When I was young, I remember lowering the flag for Kennedy (11/63) The next time I can remember it being lowered was for Eisenhower's death (2/69). It may have been lowered for Herbert Hoover's death (1/65), I don't remember it being so.

(7,203 posts)if Kirk ever said something that a normal person would say.
Doesn't need to be much, a 'love your neighbors' or 'respect others who aren't like you' would do it.
Anything to think the demise of this guy was a tragedy.
I will wait.
Meanwhile, 'Kirk's Good Wife' vows revenge on . . . somebody, or group of somebodies. WTF?
