FBI Director Kash Patel was reportedly dining out at one of New York Citys most exclusive restaurants on Wednesday night as the hunt for Charlie Kirks assassin unfolded.
NBC News reports that Patel was dining at Raos Italian restaurant in East Harlem when he posted a series of bungled tweets that provoked widespread criticism of his handling of the investigation into Kirks murder.
Posting on X at 6:21 p.m., Patel claimed a suspect was in custody, only to correct his statement hours later with a new tweet clarifying that the individual had been released after questioning.
Raos opens at 7 p.m., meaning the FBI director was likely being waited on at the celebrated eatery, which is one of the toughest tables to book in all of New York, while posting his updates. Patels tweet created confusion and was quickly contradicted by local officials, who stated that two individuals had been questioned and then released following the fatal shooting at Utah Valley University.

(68,504 posts)... the way. Why was the FBI involved anyways? The victim was nobody special, there was no interstate conspiracy involved, the shooter was nobody special, hadn't left the state. This was nothing more than a local murder, well handled and quickly solved by local authorities.
I am not falling for the TACO narrative of who the murder victim was. I'm certainly not half-masting my flag for him.

(160,061 posts)particularly for criminal cases, because they have access to certain expertise, databases, and forensics capability (e.g., the stuff that goes on in Quantico) that the states might not have.
I expect that local LEO might have given a "heads up" to their local FBI office (particularly since Kirk was a "high profile" individual).
However the problem was probably not with that local office, but with the Bondi Boondagle Brigade, who saw fit to "reach in" from their "1000 ft view" to "take control", seizing on the opportunity for a media bonanza and apparently, the bungling bit players in their troupe were "not adequately prepared".

(68,504 posts)... how many local mass murders in schools, churches, store etc have the Feds had such public presence in?

(160,061 posts)and they were/are the home of what is Corel's Wordperfect word processor program (Corel now owned by a Canadian company). We had been mandated back in the late '80s to use that by HHS (before everything switched over to M$ products), so that is when I discovered that the place existed! Before I retired, DOJ was STILL using Wordperfect for their docket templates.
That is where the university is located, so they aren't a little rural town!

(68,018 posts)I think it's not unusual for the FBI to be involved when it's a shooting like this into a large group of people. And Kirk was a well-known figure. So it's not that surprising that the FBI would be working with local authorities.
However, to your point, local LE was in charge and there was no reason whatsoever for the head of the FBI to be tweeting updates. Apparently that's never happened before.
Nor was it at all appropriate for the FBI to tell local authorities to keep the arrest secret until the next day so the president could "announce" it on Fox News.

(13,622 posts)That's at the core of their and their followers' resentment, that they aren't treated better than the next guy. It's why Trump wants a Nobel Prize. If we could build a Potemkin village, on an island, with fancy restaurants and resorts and awards ceremonies, we could trap these people forever.

(12,195 posts)You're head of the FBI. Should you cancel your hard-to-get dinner reservation and get thee to the FBI office in NYC - or should you continue on with your dinner and tweet out BS like you know what's going on?
