Memphis Mayor Responds to Trump's Claims He Was 'Happy' About National Guard Deployment: 'An Overstatement'

Source: MEDIAite

Memphis Mayor Paul Young said that President Donald Trump’s comments that he was “happy” about the decision to deploy the National Guard to his city were “an overstatement” while appearing in front of reporters on Friday.

Trump appeared on Fox & Friends on Friday morning, where he announced he would be sending federal forces, including the National Guard and “anybody else we need,” to the “deeply troubled” city of Memphis, Tennessee. “The mayor is happy,” Trump continued. “He’s a Democrat mayor, the mayor is happy.”

At a Friday presser, Young was asked by a reporter to respond to the president’s comments. “Yeah, that was an overstatement,” he said, to scattered laughter across the room.

“I am focused on the resources: FBI, DEA, ATF,” he continued. “Those are the things that I believe will truly help us be able to support law enforcement and reduce violent crime. I do not support the National Guard; however, they are coming. It’s not the mayor’s call.”

In this case, it wasn't the mayor's choice. It was the LOON RW governor Bill Lee, who "invited" this nonsense in BumRushDaShow Saturday #2

well, you know what he did. And, if you didn't know, that's what he would do then you don't belong in politics. Granted, I know nothing of Mayor Young but I don't believe he could be that naive.

ALL cities have had "fed-state partnerships" with MOUs (Memorandums of Understanding) in place to do criminal and civil investigations, for years. And this was often because both entities were always chronically underfunded and understaffed. So this was a good way to "pool resources".

But this past year, because Muskrat came in and did a chainsaw massacre on the fed side of LEO-related programmatic work from the FBI, ATF, and DEA that the mayor references (instead, moving most of what they had left to do "immigration enforcement" ), then it puts cities in more of a bind because the loon administration has now knee-capped the very things that WERE originally put in place under Biden, that DID work to bring down the crime rates nationally.

I understand the possible benefit. My comments are strictly about the Mayor saying it was an "overstatement" in response to a question about his expression of appreciation.
The Felon will take every opportunity to lie and exaggerate about any gratitude expressed to him. It's incumbent upon our politicians to make clear and deliberate statements so as not to allow the lies and exaggeration to take a foothold. It gives the false impression that he (the Felon) is making the right decision by sending in Federal law enforcement and National Guard to handle local law enforcement matters.

You can decide how to characterize his response when the remarks are put in context.

Memphis doesn't have a J.B. Pritzker as a governor who, as a literal billionaire himself, can carry a big stick (and use it) and can serve as a reassuring "backup" voice to his cities (which is why 45 did a TACO and decided not to send NG to Chicago so far).

On the other hand, Mayor Young has a loon GOP governor itching to participate in the circus sideshow.

And as a note, I have been to Memphis, TN, which when i went there back in the '90s, had dubbed themselves "the 'buckle of the Bible Belt'". And aside from Beale Street, there are A LOT of Elvis fans in and out of there and this OTT "show" might not go over very well with them.

You've made some good, valid points after which I would say after watching the press conference I would not have been compelled to write my remarks. Not because I didn't see remarks made that I don't agree with but because one, they weren't to the level that my original read would have you believe. And two, he's clearly a man between a rock and a hard place that is trying to find a soft landing.
I wish he hadn't brought up continued fear of violence, that was unnecessary. Once he stated the improvement in crime stats and the on going improvements he should have stopped. It's not his job to justify the Feds coming in, that's their job.
My reaction is very personal. I live 40 miles outside of Los Angeles and per the Supreme Court justifiably suspect because I'm brown. I know what the jackbooted thugs are capable of and I think it's the job of every politician to protect it's citizens and resist tyranny. It is true that Mayor Young is in occupied territory.
You have done right by Mayor Young and I will retract my earlier statement with the hope he becomes stronger and more resistant or even better, Federal cooperation without violence to his constituents.

How would you suggest I retract my statement beyond my statement here? If I delete the original statement then DU members would not get benefit of seeing this process played out. I could edit the end of my original post and encourage further reading?
Either way, as always BumRush thank you for the information you've provided, the dialog, your patience, fairness and time. I hope to see a suggested response.
Be well and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

But let me point out the other dynamic that I keep saying is an overlay here - HERE is the mayor of Detroit (who plans on running for governor as an Independent) -

You notice that the city of Detroit has not been uttered much if at all out of 45's mouth?

One wonders why.

Hope you have a good weekend too!
